Kash wants FISA extended 5 or 10 years; Tulsi not so enthusiastic.

The MAGA takeover of tools used to spy on President Donald Trump’s campaign has not led to the dismantling of America’s surveillance state. Instead the Swamp’s new leaders are working to keep certain levers of its spying apparatus intact and hidden.
As Trump’s intelligence chiefs briefed Congress this week, new documentation revealed they have presided over an increased number of searches involving Americans’ data compared to former President Joe Biden’s team.
The FBI told Congress in a letter last week the number of its searches about Americans in a foreign intelligence database shot up 34 percent in 2025 as compared to the final year of the Biden administration. The shock statistic, unearthed by The Record, has gotten little attention in Washington.
The FBI likes it that way.
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the federal government to target and collect foreigners’ communications. But between December 2024 and November 2025, the bureau conducted 7,413 searches for information involving U.S. persons in databases filled with material collected via FISA, according to the bureau’s letter. That’s up from 5,518 such searches during the previous year.
Congress is expected to vote next week on an 18-month extension of FISA spying powers without reforms, and some of the Deep State’s biggest one-time critics are whipping lawmakers to vote yay. Section 702 expires in April.
FBI Director Kash Patel, critic-turned-proponent of FISA, who was spied on by the bureau himself, is now calling for FISA to be extended without changes.
“Eighteen months, clean reauthorization, I don’t know where that number came from. But would you rather have it longer?” Rep. Dan Crenshaw asked at a House Select Intelligence Committee hearing Thursday.
“I’d like five or ten years,” Patel replied.
That’s an about-face for Patel, who described the same congressional reauthorization in 2024 as “bending the knee” in a podcast interview.
“You trust the director of the FBI, this guy Chris Wray, who went before you and said no, no, don’t worry, we fixed everything, we’re good?” Patel said at that time.
In his congressional testimony Thursday — one and a half years later — Patel was the FBI director assuring Congress that the bureau could contain FISA abuses internally.
Patel insisted he requires FBI lawyers to sign off on the querying of U.S. persons before subordinate agents proceed to do so.
Acting National Security Agency Director Lieutenant General William Hartman emphasized at the Thursday hearing that only Americans who show up in foreign intelligence become targets.
“When we query a U.S. person term, we’re not querying for U.S. person information, we’re querying for foreign intelligence,” Hartman told lawmakers.
But the FBI is declining to explain why it ramped up its searches.
“The FBI will let the comments to Congress speak for themselves and not speculate on the cause of the uptick,” FBI spokesman Eugene “Luke” Riley told Racket News in an email.
‘Make Everyone A Spy Provision’
Some on Capitol Hill are looking for answers about the increase in searches involving Americans.
quote:
The nation’s top spy chief was less enthusiastic, however.
“Director Gabbard, you’re supportive of the 18-month extension the president’s seeking without a warrant requirement,” said Rep. Darin LaHood, an Illinois Republican who previously fell victim to the FBI’s searches.
“That is the president’s position, and that is the position of the intelligence community,” replied Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
“And you will be supporting that, correct?” LaHood said.
“I will support the president’s decision to execute this,” she replied.

Yikes.
FISA is prone to abuse, if they can't fix that they need to go back to the drawing board.

I pray Patel simply follows the precedent set by the democrat appointees regarding FISA and does so with a vengeance.

It’s because Tulsi is intellectually honest and incorruptible.
Kash is not.
Kash is not.

Not defending Patel but I think every soul that enters DC but Trump does NOT c/o the secret FISA court once they are settled in to the beast DC.
A spell gets cast over them to say how helpful it is Then... how many synagogues get shot up and transexual half breeds on crazy meds kill people...w/o the secret spy room listening to their rants to impede the attacks...

Likely because it’s basically warrantless. Add a warrant to the language and it would be a whole lot better

I hate FISA, but I think the argument against that is now you're basically giving foreigners the same constitutional rights as citizens.
I think Boosie mentioned having some type of ombudsman. Kash seems comfortable that he has cleaned up the corruption on this, but we'll see when a Dem gets back in.

I have mixed feelings about this. FISA is a tool for federal law enforcement, as with any tool, if used properly and for it's intended purpose it is a great help.
On the other hand, when folks misuse this tool for nefarious reasons, it's a horrible thing and shits on our freedom.

It is a secret court that the democrats will abuse immediately without a thought. With a yes man Boasberg pre set and ready...
They already had measures to prevent abuse brushed over....like a Jim Comey sign off with seashells on a beach.

He might be the worst pick in the entire administration, and that's a bad place to put a crappy choice.

But he partied with the USA hockey team, so mass warrantless spying is ok!

It is almost as if they can pop off about FISA until they actually get the job and are read in on the threats. Nobody wants to be the one who cuts it off and risks the shite hitting the fan afterwards.

That's one possibility.
The other is that they don't like others to have that power but when they get it all of a sudden it's very, very important to our safety. Nobody could be against our safety but terrorist lovers.

Can you explain the "but Trump" disclaimer?
