Of all the Oscar best picture winners, which movie would you recommend if I was only going to watch one? I was thinking Bugonia or Sinners but open to suggestions.

Bugonia is weird af, but I liked it. Sinners is much more straightforward and has more traditional action sequences. Bugonia was the more memorable of the two while sinners was probably the more enjoyable watch. Depends on your preference

One Battle After Another was enjoyable.

I would recommend it for at least a single viewing.

Train Dreams and it’s not even close.

Bugonia was good. Sinners was good. They’re both schlock and would never have been best picture nominees before we went collectively crazy after Covid. Still definitely worth watching.

One Battle After Another is the kind of movie people pretend to like because other people also pretend they like it, but the characters don’t feel like real people and the story is a “message.” It’ll be completely forgotten in a year or so.

I do like One Battle After Another, but I do recommend Bugonia and Train Dreams. Both were solid.

F1 too as a solid popcorn movie that will entertain you.

One Battle After Another was good, but that’s about as far as I can go with it

That was my one big issue with the movie.

The main characters aren’t real people, while everyone else in the world is.

Lockjaw, Bob, Perfidia, Sensei, they all belong in a different movie.

They don’t fit the world they live in.

It is a major flaw.

After separating myself from that, I enjoyed it though.

I disagree with this.

There isn’t really a political message.

Everyone in the movie is a retard.

I didn’t hate it I guess.

I think it’s one of those things where I watched it in the context of the Oscars. I had already seen Train Dreams and loved it. Watched OBAA after the nominations were announced and just couldn’t get over the idea that it was a 2 way race between that and Sinners for best picture.

Train Dreams was clearly Oscar bait, but boy did I cry like a baby (like I did watching The Whale).

Bugonia was a blast.

Really enjoyed Sinners.

I started a thread about the movie Jesus’ Son that got almost zero responses, so I’ll repeat it here.

It’s from a novella by Denis Johnson, the writer of Train Dreams. I highly recommend it. It’s veeery similar in tone and theme, but about a drug addict in 1970s Midwest instead of a lumberjack in 1900s Pacific Northwest. Great acting and great side characters.

What's the message?

Probably Sinners. It has the widest cross-section of impressive craft and broad entertainment appeal.

Marty Supreme is a wild ride. I don't think it's been suggested yet.

Awesome old school action popcorn movie. Not political or weird arse art house stuff for the Academy to reward appropriately.

Train Dreams
Bugonia
One Battle After Another
Marty Supreme
The Secret Agent
F1
Sinners
Frankenstein
Sentimental Value

I’ve seen all of them and I’d rank them in that order

OBAA and Marty Supreme were my favorites followed by Sinners and Bugonia. F1 was a lot of fun and is probably the most universally accessible out of all of the nominees.

Outside of the Best Picture noms, Weapons, Black Bag and a small indie movie about baseball called Eephus were my favorites.

Definitely F1 for the casual movie fan. I just can’t imagine not seeing it in imax, probably isn’t close to the same experience at home. That was the most legit imax experience I’ve probably ever had
