Someone has to do the job of protecting the public.

Release only if criminal lives with judge for one week
Posted on 3/16/26 at 1:35 am to prouddawg
We need more of this.
It's a can't lose situation for the Sheriff. If he loses in state supreme court, the guy is released and the judge loses reelection.
Unfortunately, it might take this guy who publicly gets released hurting someone, but eventually the Sheriff wins the argument.

Supreme Court will have little choice but to rule in favor of the Justice Court. Unfortunately, this moron of a judge is going to get someone killed before he’s removed. The accused has a homicide conviction and previously ran from police, while armed, during electronic surveillance. How either of those, let alone both, don’t automatically deny bail, I haven’t a clue.

As of mid-March 2026, the Nevada Supreme Court is reviewing a petition from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) to stop a judge from holding Sheriff Kevin McMahill in contempt for refusing to release a high-risk offender. The case centers on whether judges can force the Sheriff to use electronic monitoring for suspects considered dangerous by law enforcement.
Case Details: Sheriff McMahill refused to release Joshua Sanchez-Lopez, a career criminal with 35 prior arrests, acting against a release order from Justice Eric Goodman.
The Conflict: The LVMPD argues they are not obligated to follow court orders that ignore legal safety protocols, arguing the court is forcing them to violate statutory duties.
Legal Action: The LVMPD asked the Nevada Supreme Court for a writ of prohibition to halt the contempt proceedings, framing this as a clash over who has the authority to declare a defendant too dangerous to be released.
It is not possible to predict the final Nevada Supreme Court ruling, as it depends on their interpretation of Nevada law regarding judicial discretion versus sheriff authority over, electronic monitoring, a legal battle that is actively ongoing as of March 15,

Police are tired of bearing the brunt of bad decisions of lefty judges (who don't seem to give a rat's arse about citizens).

35 arrests?
Ummm
No- I’m listening to law enforcement not some weak judge who wants to practice some new rehabilitation program

Bail is a constitutional right.
The sheriff is breaking the law.
Strange sides y'all are taking. I'll keep defending our rights, especially when LEO breaks the law and violates those rights. That's an incredibly American philosophy. I'm sorry y'all are abandoning fundamental pillars of America for feelings.

During a bench warrant return hearing, Goodman set bail at $25,000, ordering Sanchez-Lopez to Metro’s electronic monitoring program should he post bond.
The program allows defendants to leave jail and wear an ankle bracelet. Various levels of the program require different levels of confinement. Goodman ordered Sanchez-Lopez to high-level electronic monitoring, which Dickerson described as house arrest. About 450 defendants are in the program at a time.
And while I knew the argument from LEO was poor, after reading this it's even worse.

A 2020 Nevada Supreme Court decision requires judges to set the least restrictive bail amount for defendants to ensure they return to court.
I doubt the sheriff is going to be successful in violating these fundamental rights

You are probably right. But look at the larger picture; this judge is now on notice and publicly known for this action. If this guy commits another crime, this will be on every tv commercial next time he has to run for office. And I bet the sheriff wins in a landslide. Doubt he buys a drink/dinner again in that city.
Good for the sheriff for making this public.

People need to pay closer attention to what their district judges and DA’s are doing. Hell, even in ol’ conservative St. Tammany the DA is reducing charges and judges keep giving repeat offenders a slap on the wrist. It’s pathetic.

Nothing the judge did was out of the ordinary.
A $25k bond for auto theft is not a very low bond.
Home incarceration after posting bond is particularly strict.

It appears his lawbreaking is what became public.
Again, y'all are arguing against our rights and for LEO to break the law and violate those rights. What is wrong with y'all?

How effective is this in reality?
Posted on 3/16/26 at 7:03 am to jimmy the leg
There are lots of recent studies about pretrial supervision methods other than bail bring more effective at bail, but I'm not sure of the actual efficacy of those studies.
I only have dealt with one judge who tried it, and he's anti-woke. He was more focused on efficiency and data and I imagine if it wasn't better he wouldn't have done it for years

Feelings? He has a homicide conviction and has been arrested 35 times. That's a fact. You should take him in and live with you

And? He's presumed innocent of these current charges. Or do you want to shite on that part of the Constitution, too?
If he's convicted of the current charges, that history will play a role in sentencing I imagine.

Now you're mixing up NPC talking points

So a life time threat should be let out in public by the state sc. Lovely
To add, they have left him out till he killed some one. Courts be doing work.

Not a lawyer but what states that bail is a constituational right and must be made available in all cases?
8th amendment says excessive bail shall not be required.
