The europeans have been back-channel selling things and services to many enemy nations over the years. I go to conferences with my peers, many european, and they smile and wink about these matters. Maybe you get a few too many beers in them and the fess up. Its done through enough intermediaries that we can't come out and prosecute them, but the EU has been making plenty of money from Iran, Saddam's Iraq, etc...

Ultimately a politician's (esp at the DC level) loyalty is only to wealth and power. There are plenty of people who make actual sacrifices for the betterment of this country, but very, very few of them are elected officials in DC.

The way the UK whines, the initial 'offense' use was for an 'illegal war.'
Once IRGC fought back, it became a legal war and a 'defensive' stance could be approved.
