My Mom found a letter my Dad wrote to me and my siblings about 10 years before he died. It was mostly him telling us all how much he loved us, how the time he spent with us growing up were the greatest times of his life, along with some memories/anecdotes about each of us.

There was also a lot about how much he regretted having to be away nights, weekends or holidays for work, and how he wished he would have had a job that allowed him to be with us more, which is funny, because we all remember him being there for pretty much everything throughout our respective childhoods.

I feel so lucky to have gotten to read this letter. I cried like a little girl during and after, and— hell— I’m getting choked up typing this. But they’re mostly happy, appreciative tears. I love my Dad. He was a fantastic father.

The moral here, though, is to love those kids and spend all the time you can with them. It’s likely what you— and they— are going to remember. Not the toys and material things, but the memories of the time and experiences. It goes by faster than you’re going to want it to; I see with my own child. Make the most of it.

Wow that had to be like finding gold. I treasure all the memories my mother left behind.

Mine are still kids. This makes me want to write a letter and put it in a drawer for them.

That was difficult for him to write but he loved you immensely and did it.

What a treasure.

Great story. I have something semi similar as well.

After my mom passed we were cleaning out her house and found a box with sentimental stuff she saved. Report cards from when we were in elementary school and some pictures, etc. Was already balling crying from that but then stumbled upon a poem that she wrote about me from when I was a kid.

Never knew my mom wrote it or that she had ever wrote any type of poetry. It was about the sadness of seeing her son grow old and wishing she could still spend the time with him that she did when he was a kid. It was the saddest thing I've ever read but also just utterly beautiful.

I have a picture of it but probably too personal to post but would also kind of love for people to see how good it was. I cry thinking about it. Man I miss her.

I just wrote a letter for all three of my kids. I had open heart surgery and although the chance was small I could die I wanted to them to have something to remember me by since the oldest is only 6. I’m not gonna lie it ls the toughest thing I’ve ever done writing those letters. Now luckily they don’t have to read them.

What a treasure to find.

My mom passed about 4 years ago and her and my relationship was “troubled” today the least. Now that she’s been gone I sort of regret not trying more in her later life to connect better.

That is amazing. I would give anything to find something like that from my dad. I was talking to my college age daughter this morning and she asked me if I wish I would've done something different in my career (more challenging). I told her I wouldn't change a thing, because my job has allowed me to be very involved in my daughter's lives and never miss a thing. You can't get that time back...

Lost my Dad this past year. I would love to find a letter like that. I've often thought of writing a letter of my own just in case something happens to me and just keep it updated as my children get older.

My dad died a year ago next week and found this letter in his closet that my mom must have saved from when I was a kid. I miss him dearly.

great post. i've got 2 young kids. time seems to have sped up faster than expected since becoming a father. "it goes by faster than you're going to want it to" is something i seem to be realizing lately.

Very cool story. That must have been a great letter to read. Kudos to your dad for leaving it for you.

While cleaning out my folk's house, I found a cassette tape. I still have one car with a cassette player and I put it in the deck while running an errand. My dad's voice came on, a voice I had not heard in 10 years. It was a tape of him giving a lecture on various fruits and vegetable crops. I was surprised at how thick and Southern his accent sounded, but it was great to hear it again. I was also surprised at how much I knew about the things he was lecturing about even though we went into different fields.
