No attorney friends? Folks often forget that they can notarize stuff and just putting their bar roll # down is sufficient.

Louisiana acts like being a notary is some kind of big deal. Where I live the only requirement is a signature and $50. It’s just acting as a witness, you’re not performing surgery.

What just about everyone doesn’t know is that the stamp is just for show and what people expect so we still do it. Oooooooohhhhh a seal!

Texas:

Notary Bond Varies (typically around $50)
Application Fee $21
Notary Stamp and Record Book Approximately $40-$50

And they even offer to let you become an online notary using conference calls instead of in person visits.

You can thank attorneys for that. They don’t want anyone cutting into any possible revenue streams.

The attorneys made it so notaries have to know how to draft contracts and legal documents so they could make it as difficult as possible for entry.

Don't blame attorneys, as much as the factions that seek to limit new entrants. Don't you remember the licensing issues around flower arranging?
quote:

ARLINGTON, Va.—Yesterday, the Louisiana State Legislature passed HB 933, a bill that eliminates the state’s florist licensing and testing requirements and would require only an operating permit to sell or arrange flowers. Louisiana is the only state that makes it illegal to create and sell floral arrangements without first passing a written exam and obtaining a state license. The deregulation bill passed both chambers with large margins and now heads to the Governor’s desk.

Louisiana is farked up.

Actually most attorneys will notarize for free if you go to their office if they are available in hopes you become a future client.

No, the stamp is still allowed in the law so that I can use it as an excuse (“Oh, sorry I would but I don’t have my stamp”) to avoid having my kids travel ball teammates mom from asking me to notarize her divorce petition affidavit at 7pm on a Saturday.

Post something on a general fb group for that area and you will have like 50 replies in a min. It’s almost like asking if anyone knows a realtor.

This shouldn’t be getting downvoted, because it’s true. Every attorney in Louisiana is eligible to be a notary without taking an exam, but you still have to apply and pay the fee. You’d be surprised how many attorneys simply never do so.

Not in Louisiana. This is a civil law state rather than a common law state.

It’s difficult to become a notary, and so UPS stores typically don’t have one in Louisiana.

The pass rate for the Louisiana notary exam is about 15%; per the Secretary of State.

Most ups stores have notaries in LA. I refer people there all the time. They are not there all day and not most weekends
