He just called their bluff in the Strait of Hormuz.

quote:

In this Wednesday update, Susan Kokinda argues that President Trump has openly ruptured with the UK over Iran, base access, and broader British policies on energy and immigration, while treating Germany under Chancellor Friedrich Merz as a more reliable partner and moving to cut trade with Spain over NATO and base issues. She says Britain blocked US use of Diego Garcia and other RAF bases for initial strikes, prompting Trump’s public criticism. Kokinda frames Lloyd’s of London’s decision to cancel war-risk coverage for Gulf shipping as a weapon of British imperial power, and highlights Trump’s response: directing the US Development Finance Corporation to provide political risk insurance and putting the Navy on notice to escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. She adds that Iranian strikes on Gulf neighbors pushed GCC states into condemning Iran and aligning more closely with the US.

I've never understood this. Just use it anyway and tell Starmer "Get fricked. Come move us if you're feeling froggy."

Most people aren’t aware just how much historical antipathy there is for the UK in the Middle East.

First time I was in Bahrain, I was surprised to find how much they still hated Brits and took shots at then whenever they could.

Interesting. I didn’t know this.

Glad Trump is taking them down a few pegs.

Anyone have a lead on how I can get in on providing tanker insurance? I’ll take that risk.

Well, they do blame the UK for the establishment of a modern Jewish state in Palestine.

Isn't Britain generally blamed for how they carved up the Middle East?

Its obviously no win...but I always thought every Middle East country was pissed at Britain for the boarders on an eternal basis...

This is what I was getting at last night, but worded poorly due to beers.

The US is positioned to control the oil markets.

People on here love to blame America for today’s problems. Seems like the Brits were the primary driver and we got talked into it.

From AI

Key Aspects of the UK's Role1941 Forced Accession: During WWII, British and Soviet forces invaded Iran. The UK deemed Reza Shah uncooperative, forced him to abdicate, and placed his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, on the throne to ensure a compliant leadership.
1953 Coup (Operation Boot): Following Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh’s nationalization of the British-controlled Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP), the UK’s MI6 instigated a coup.
Instigation and Planning: British intelligence (MI6) actively plotted to overthrow Mosaddegh, using propaganda, bribery of politicians, and, according to reports, funding to generate unrest.
Collaboration with US: The UK convinced the initially hesitant US to support the coup, combining resources to restore the Shah's absolute power.
Post-Coup Support: Following the coup, Britain and the US supported the Shah's increasingly repressive rule for over two decades, including military aid.

The UK’s actions were driven by the need to secure Iranian oil reserves and maintain strategic influence in the region.

We'd better be careful. The British Army may send Commandos to take Diego Garcia away from us.
