KPLC-18 wheeler wreck

WESTLAKE, La. (KPLC) - The Calcasieu River Bridge is closed after a crash involving a car hauler left several vehicles overturned and sent debris flying off the bridge.

Westlake police is asking drivers to avoid I-10 and take another route. Lake Charles police is diverting westbound traffic just before the bridge and Louisiana State Police has I-10 East blocked off at the I-210 interchange near Westlake.

Around 10:51 Friday night, Westlake police learned of a two-vehicle crash on the bridge, Chief Chris Wilrye confirmed. While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, the crash led to an 18-wheeler hauling multiple vehicles to overturn.

Diesel from the 18-wheeler also began leaking and caught fire. DEQ was notified and responded to the scene, and the fire has since been put out, according to Wilrye.

One person was taken to the hospital, their condition is currently unknown, Wilrye said.

According to Wilrye, debris fell off the bridge following the crash. He confirmed no vehicles fell off the bridge.

The crash has left the bridge severely damaged, Wilrye said. It will remain closed until DOTD assesses its condition and deems it is safe to open.

7News will be following this story through the weekend, and will pass along any updates as we learn more.

For those more familiar with the traffic in the area, how viable will 210 be as a bypass?

So you’re the one who caused the car hauler to flip.

I’d bet big they find the trucker going well over the bridge speed limit, likely weaving lane to lane to pass cars, clipped the car involved. Being cause of the wreck.
Just a guess …

That bridge is one of the most monitored bridges in the US, if not THE most monitored. They just did a big operation on it a few years ago when they redid the 210 bridge, to anticipate the extra traffic. Now they're going to assess it again after this crash.

The unsafe part of it is how steep it is, the narrow lanes, and the lack of adequate guard rails.

Yeah but did you know the side rails have pistols on it?

I thought it was just the general shitty infrastructure and how outdated it is.. but i guess that would explain the inadequate guard rails.. i heard so many negative things about that bridge that i stopped going over it probably 10 or 12 years ago.. but im only in that area probably a couple times a year so it’s easy to avoid .

I watched a video on Mike Soileau’s FB page that showed debris from the wreck caught a structure below the bridge on fire. I can’t tell what building it is though. Another video had flames spewing from the expansion joints as seen from below the bridge.

Yeah the fact there was diesel fire is worrisome for how long it will take to fix this if damage was done.

I’d like to know how severe the damage because 210 will be terrible come the work week. Good thing the eta of the new bridge is 4+ years away.

Wow that escalated quick .

No, more like i saw some lists of ‘most dangerous bridges in the US’ or something, and when i saw that bridge appear more than once, and at the time I crossed it twice a month- i figured better to avoid it .. but you do you, tough guy .

Well in their defense that stretch of I-10 is pretty mountainous, treacherous and hard to navigate.

The Facebook Karnes love sharing those to make people feel that the structure of the bridge is unsafe, but the dangerousness of the bridge has to do with the factors I discussed earlier (narrow lanes, incline angle, etc.). The structure is evaluated pretty regularly.
