The New Orleans Saints have begun their annual maneuvering to clear salary cap space.
And to get cap compliant this year, all it took was a few moves.
According to the NFLPA’s salary cap database, the Saints initially restructured three players ahead of free agency opening next week. That, plus the reported restructure of Chase Young, now gives the Saints an estimated $20 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap.
The Saints, who entered the offseason with a much healthier cap sheet than in past years, have the potential to open even more room if they elect to touch other contracts.
Here’s what they’ve done so far
Juwan Johnson
Johnson had $7.85 million of his base salary converted, dropping his cap number to $5.2 million. As a reminder, a simple restructure his contract does not actually cost them money. But each deal increases the cap hit of the next year and often tacks on void years.
Cap savings: nearly $6.3 million
Justin Reid
The Saints gave Reid a three-year deal last offseason, making the contract a prime candidate to touch. They converted $7.9 million into a signing bonus, dropping his cap hit to $5.2 million.
Cap savings: $6.3 million
Alvin Kamara
This one was surprising, but according to New Orleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, Kamara’s restructure wasn’t a standard conversion. But according to NFLPA records, Kamara’s base salary dropped from $11.5 million to $1.3 million, dropping his cap hit from $18.2 million to nearly $10.1 million.
Cap savings: $8.1 million
Chase Young
The Saints converted nearly $13.7 million of Young’s 2026 base salary to a prorated signing bonus, lowering his cap hit to $9.6 million. Young's restructure has yet to be officially processed, but was reportedly converted on Thursday.
Projected Cap savings: $10.9 million
They have created an estimated $20M in space already Reported by Matthew Paras

These moves suggests were back in win now mode.

We can create up to about another $40 mil with restructures plus an Olave extension. Could have been more if we did Davis and Jordan, but they seem unlikely now.

I don’t want to get too crazy but I mean this is kind of what you should do when you have a QB on a rookie contract.

Im pretty sure I read somewhere the Saints are required to spend 55million this offseason.

No they don't
We were still over the cap and had to get under
We did far, far far more in past years

There is quite literally no choice.
in 2027 we currently have I believe the most cap space in the league, or close to it.
We are slowly getting back to fiscal responsibility

If the Saints believe they have their franchise QB on a rookie deal…..they should ABSOLUTELY be in win now mode.
Being in win now mode doesn’t mean doing stupid deals. They can be in win now mode and do deals that make sense for the timeline but are not reckless.

They were $11+M over the cap with 62 players under contract (include those guys that are PS at best and roster fillers for the offseason). Moving money down the road was inevitable. The question is, how much more do they try to move, and how ridiculous or realistic do they approach the offseason with

I thought when you do these type restructures, it spreads out over 4 seasons. One of the reasons they are not doing the older players like Cam and DD. Biting the bullet now.
I understand the restructuring of certain players, but why AK? He will be 31 in July and is a running back who has already lost a step.
I understand it saves money for the 2026 season. I’m asking why him specifically, because of age / production. Instead of a pay cut, trade, post June 1 cut.
Reid, Johnson, Granderson are close to his age, but possibly have 4 more seasons in them.
Edit: Maybe this answers my question:
Nick Underhill
@nick_underhill
The Saints and Alvin Kamara converted $10.155 million of his salary, but it WASN’T the same standard conversion that Justin Reid, Juwan Johnson and Chase Young did.

FYI, bonuses can be spread out up to 5 years.
I agree with questioning spreading out AK, but I suspect it has to do with it was a larger number and will allow the most room. His contract numbers are already updated on OTC & spotrac, so I don't know what it used to look like, but pay cuts are extremely rare in the league. And it usually involves older players that are going to take on a much smaller role; Cam did this a few years back when he went to approximately 50% of the snaps. Ram also did it to sit on IR for the season; obviously different situation
Again, they recently updated it so I can't see the numbers, but from what I recall there was not much savings for a cut/trade situation with AK. They could have cut him and designated him a post 6/1 cut, but you don't get those savings until after 6/01 and they probably need the space now for FA. Also, does not make sense to cut a productive player if you don't already have a replacement under contract.

Yall can be so fugging annoying about the cap
Do you realize the cap has gone up about $25 million every year?
One need only look at that graph to know Loomis knows what he’s doing and people who call him an idiot are the actual idiots
We’re going on 20 years and yall still can’t get your heads around it

Iirc that's cash not cap, but also that includes things like these restructures since we are turning them into signing bonuses and giving the players cash. We may actually already have met that requirement.
