Just how necessary is the Forward assist?

It’s now the first thing I see on my AR wondering why it’s not on so many other guns.

Who here has actually had to use it?

I’ve used it on colder days when the rifle is dirty. The rifle is always dirty.

I have 3 Wilson Billet sets that do not have it.

All my others do. I think I’ve used it when trying to be quiet and couldn’t release the charging handle.

The same people that tell you you don't need the FA are the same people that call a DI gun and 'internal piston' weapon.

While technically they may be halfway or wholly accuracte, the pretentiousness is beyond nauseating.

:raiseshand:

(At this point, at least 30, 35 times - especially with blanks.)

I certainly did, dragging a rifle through the sand at Ft. Benning, very crunchy sending that bolt home but it still worked.

I use it all the time to quietly chamber rounds. I could get by without it, would just be noisier.

If you fire a lot of steel case ammo, you'll eventually need to use it.

I have 3 ARs, they all have one, but I don't think I've ever used it outside the military.

It is pretty essential when the weapon is used as originally intended. Same with the dust cover.

Pretty sure only one of mine has it. I try to get without.

my recollection is that the forward assist was intended to be used to chamber a round if the receiver got full of mud or something. Highly unlikely that the typical civilian user would ever be confronted with that

I had one failure to fire on a hog because the bolt didn't close. I had lowered the charging handle quietly to load it. Now I'm OCD about punching the forward assist a couple times every hunt while sitting in my stand.
