Who has watched the sequels and prequels to Lonesome Dove?

For me, Lonesome Dove is the best western ever made. Obviously this is largely due to the amazing performance of Robert Duvall. He brought the character of Gus alive, and is probably my favorite fictional character ever written.
I’m about halfway through Return to Lonesome Dove right now and it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever watched, but there’s no comparison to the original.
John Voight pulls off about 50% of what Tommy Lee Jones did as Captain Call. This doesn’t feel like one I’ll be rewatching.
How do the other series stack up?
Are they worth watching?

Sacrilege. I never watched any of them nor do I want to.
Same with Texasville, does a disservice to the original.

I liked Streets of Laredo with James Garner, Sam Shepard and Sissy Spacek. However Spacek isn't near the beauty Diane Lane was. The book was very good but I always had trouble seeing how in the world Pea Eye pulled Lorena.

Return was not written or based on a novel by Larry McMurtry. Dead Man's Walk and Streets of Laredo were the real prequel and sequel. Both stories are good, but the series are nowhere near on the level of Lonesome Dove.
Streets of Lardeo is good and the cast is definitely better than Dead Man's Walk. James Garner and Sam Shepard are Call and Pea Eye. They do a good job, but Tommy Lee Jones as Call can't be topped.
Dead Man's Walk is the younger Gus and Woodrow, but the actors are terribly miscast. Edward James Olmos plays a Mexican officer and he is by far the best part of the series.
I would recommend Streets of Laredo but not Dead Man's Walk.

This is why I could never take the sequel seriously. No way after reading the original novel, could you believe Pea ended up with Lorena.

Lonesome Dove is something near and dear to me. And I say that as, when I first watched, I was an 8 year old girl. Gus and Cal were just so awesome. It was epic. There was likely some bonding with my Dad, while we watched, mesmerized. Anything after was trash.

Writers outthink themselves all the time. Pea Eye with Lorena? Ninja, please.

I couldn't finish the sequel. The chemistry was missing. Everything was missing. It felt like a poor imitation of the original. It felt like a straight to video movie.
And no Basil Poledouris score.

Return to Lonesome Dove and the short lived tv series Lonesome Dove: the series (AKA known as Lonesome Dove The outlaw years) were pretty bad. McMurtry had no involvement. They were written by the tv studio. Avoid both of these.
Streets of Laredo was good as long as you treat it as a standalone novel and Miniseries. Continuity errors and the goofy Lorena Pea Eye pairing make it hard to swallow for fans of the original. But taken on its own, it is pretty good. It is much darker than the original.
Dead Mans Walk was a good book and I enjoyed it. The miniseries was just ok. Some parts were miscast, especially the young Gus. But it is still enjoyable. The ending was silly though.
Comanche Moon is an abortion. Avoid it at all costs.

I've seen it all. None of it is aweful but the character of Gus pushed the original into another stratosphere. In my opinion, he is the greatest fictional character ever. Without him, it is missing much of its heart. If you are able to not constantly compare them, then they might be worth a watch.

I have said this aloud several times.
Robert Duvall’s portrayal of Gus is probably 80% of the reason why I think Lonesome Dove is the best western ever made. I’ll probably try to watch all of the parts of the series, but I know his absence will be felt.

I’ve been watching one episode a night since they’re free on Tubi tv.

you're not wrong, but how about a little love for Tommy Lee? I don't know of anyone else who would've made that character as good.

The sequel book coming after the initial series is the reason for that, I guess. Pea Eye wasn't as old in the book, IIRC. His age in the series was damn near that of Call/Gus, if not older, and that worsened his simplemindedness. It's odd, based on the TV character, to say the least, though she wasn't going to marry anyone she'd been with as a prostitute. Been a while since I read the books, though, so I could be wrong.
