NY AG Letitia James is suing games company Valve

If you know anything about PC gaming, then you'll know that Valve is the king of sales and distribution online. They're the 800 lb gorilla in the room. They're also the author and publisher of mega-popular games like the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and Left-4-Dead series of games. And of course, James is going after them to try to drum up some favorable political headlines for herself, as well as a scalp in the form of some kind of monetary fine. You have to wonder if California's fool AG won't follow suit and try to get a piece of this:

The attorney general of New York Letitia James is suing Valve, alleging the platform illegally promotes gambling to children.
This comes from a press release issued by the attorney general's office today, which states that following an investigation, the office of the attorney general "found that Valve’s video games, including Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, and Dota 2, enable gambling by enticing users to pay for the chance to win a rare virtual item of significant monetary value."
"In Valve’s most popular game [Counter-Strike 2], the process resembles a slot machine, with an animated spinning wheel that eventually rests on a selected item. The randomly selected virtual items have no in-game functionality but can be sold online for money, with one item reportedly being sold for more than $1 million. The lawsuit alleges that Valve has made billions of dollars luring its users, many of whom are teenagers or younger, to engage in gambling in the hopes of winning expensive virtual items that they can cash in on. With this lawsuit, Attorney General James seeks to permanently stop Valve from continuing to promote illegal gambling in its games and to pay disgorgement and fines."

I’m no fan of Letitia James, but these companies shouldn’t be allowed to do this. They’re marketing gambling to boys and young men.

There is one game I downloaded that you build sites and the way you make money is by spinning a slot machine for coins and other collectibles for free spins or other minigames that give you more spins.
Then you have the apps that advertise no ads, but they pester you into buying items or matches to keep the game going.

Does this mean no more Leisure Suit Larry? :(

Epic/Fortnite was sued for this and changed it. The gambling is bad, but they really need to go after Valve for taking 30% of every purchase. That is a killer for small studios, and it's really the only option they have.

30% is the industry standard. It’s what Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo charge as well.
Personally, I’d be happy to see an end to gambling, loot boxes, etc. They are incredibly addictive for younger players, and we have an entire generation or two of boys and men who spend all their free time wasting away on video games.

This is why I hate the AG of NY position. They take it upon themselves to frick with everyone in exchange for settlements or favorable contributions.
She needs to go after EA and Activision for pay to win, not Valve for cosmetic shite people resell.

How is this any different than what the carnies are doing with the rubber ducks or ring toss at the fair?

She should sue Electronic Arts because they hide the gambling inside E and T rated sports games a kid can purchase without an adult.

Sure this won’t be a popular opinion at all but I miss when gambling was illegal. fricking sick of all the casino and sports book ads.

Woke up one day to a $1700 dollar Microsoft bill for gaming charges made by my son and his friends, both then 8 years old. After a call to the Texas AG's office and them contacting Microsoft to try and gain understanding about how an 8 year old kid could be allowed to buy virtual items online where the kids are unable to move forward, but if they would just purchase these $25 virtual items they could press forward. Sure. Money had no value to them. Same as Monopoly money, as far as kids are concerned. Microsoft credited it back but blocked his account over it. They probably made billions upon billions off unknowing parents.

Because you are paying to play those games at a carnival with knowledge of the rules.
Now I will use Madden as an example. You are paying full price for the game. Inside the game is a mode called MUT (Madden Ultimate Team). This is a specific game within the game where you build up a team starting with low level players. You build these teams to play head to head with other online players.
As you progress in the game you can add better players or even historic players. This is done by buying packs of cards (think baseball cards) that get purchased through points earned by playing in game or real money.
The catch is the points earned is very minimal and would require playing it constantly. So, it's essentially pay to play if you want to be competitive.
EA also limits how many players you can create per team for the standard game modes like franchise. So, if you are trying to create a historic team or league it is not possible. This is their way to try to push people to MUT to spend money on historic players.
Other games like NBA 2K and MLB the Show do not have such roster limitations for franchise modes. Though both have similar predatory functions in their versions of MUT and My player modes.

So it’ll be a fair fight?

Maybe, but this is literally just a cash grab to help solve their financial problems and pay for benefits for illegals. It isn't some altruistic move by Letitia out of genuine concern.

Valve is a completely different company compared to when they made Half-Life/Left 4 Dead. I wouldn’t trust them to make a good video game now even with an AAA sized budget. The greats in that company left a long time ago.

That’s not why she is after them it’s because the platform has been a hot bed of young kids who are promoting conservative speech which she wants to stamp out.

Still great talent there. They made HL Alyx a few years back and it was incredible. Their hardware is also excellent. Satisfied owner of their Index VR headset and Steam Deck.

How are AGs allowed to sue private companies? Either indict them or GTFO.

Went on a hike recently, a lot of the folks brought their kids. Through the rainforest, beautiful river and waterfall, broke out into the ocean with an astounding beach, their kids had a blast.
