Did you or your kids have a huge growth spurt or was it more gradual?

My son has been asking when he’s going to grow taller. He’s 4’11 at 12, which is right within normal range. I told him not to worry about it, but middle school is already putting pressure on them to be perfect.
His mom is 5’9 and she’s the shortest person in her entire extended family. Grandmother is 5’11. Grandfather is 6’3. Uncle is 6’5. Bit further out, they have a few guys over 6’8.
My side of the family is very…Southern Louisiana. I’m 5’7. I think I was 5’6 in 8th grade and didn’t grow much after that.
Dad is 5’8. Mom 5’2. My uncle is a bit of an anomaly. He was 5’4 going into his senior year of high school and shot up to 6’0 by the time he graduated.
I don’t know which side of the family’s genes he’s got but he’s a spitting image of his mother.

I grew like 10 inches between 6 and 8th grade
My 12 year old daughter has grown at least 6" this year

Its genetically driven obviously and there are calculations to determine the 'likely' height once theyre done growing.
But like anything, its not a hard rule and we all know that tall guy whose parents are gnomes.
Feed him lots of meat, fish and milk, get him into sports and exercising -> you'll set him up to maximize his potential

My brother grew 9 inches between 8th grade and 9th grade.

Went from 4’11 95lbs my freshman year to 5’10 125 senior year.
Topped out around 6’1 at 20 and 165lbs. Got up to 215 now I’m around 180.

Gradual. Had no massive jumps. IIRC, my pediatrician growing up was fairly shocked how linear my growth curve was

I was a late bloomer for sure. I didn't think I would ever hit puberty. Then spring/ summer of 99' my body went nuts. I looked like a different person when school started back.

I graduated high school at 6'-1". Started college the next fall at 6'-4".
My daughter is 5'-10". My son is 5'9". He got screwed.

10 inches in a year in high school.
Hurt like shite sometimes in my sleep and I don't know if there was anyone on Earth with a bigger appetite or bigger sleep requirement. It was like my internal engines were maxing out the RPMs 24/7.

I was 4’10 until the end of 9th grade then I jumped up to 5’6 by sophomore year. 6’ now. Some people grow at different rates

My kids are all very short for their age, but so was I and now I'm tall. The pediatricians keep predicting my boys will be like 5'7" because they're 10-15th percentile in height right now and their mom and mom's side of the family is short.
But they have clear signs of younger "bone age" as they call it.
I was the last one in my class to lose my baby teeth and the last one to hit puberty. So are they. I think their genes are programmed like mine - to be a year younger than our natural age.
I put all of their chart data from the doctor in ChatGPT, as well as my height each year I had on record (which I had a measuring stick from my childhood with notches), my wife's family's adult heights, as well as the fact they and I were last to lose teeth and show signs of puberty, and ChatGPT said they'd be 5'10"-6'2". Said anything outside of that would be outside some standard deviations, etc.

It’s in the football program. freshman year hs 5’3”. Sophomore year 5’10”. Still grew gradually even after hs but ended up 6’2”.
I was a late bloomer and was far more concerned with pubic hair than height.
Very good news for you is my parents were just like you and your wife. My dad is 5’6” and by far the tallest from his family. Both his parents and sisters under 5 feet. My mom is 5’10 and all her male relatives well over 6’. My Dad had 4 sons with her, we all look just like him, all around 6 feet tall. I think tallness is dominant

All I wanted was some pube and pit hair
And I was dead last to get it

But now I have a thick head of hair in my 40s and no grays. So maybe aging slowly is benefitting me now
I also ended up being pretty hairy, which is ironic. Rug on my chest and can grow a mean beard. Genes are wild.

My 12 yo son is 5'-8" about 170 and is in size 12 1/2 men's shoes. I told him he better keep growing. I warned him that all the kids that he towers over now could very well pass him up in the not to distant future.
FWIW i'm only 5'-10" and his mom is about 5'-6" but there's tall folks on both sides of the family. We'll see.

Yeah he should make sure that’s not what his son is really asking. Being the last boy in the locker room with bare armpits sucks. It’s a lot of anxiety and insecurity. At the end it doesn’t matter, what’s an extra year? But that extra year at the time sucks a lot
