Mexican officials report that Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed today during a Mexican Army operation.

According to initial reporting, the mission was intended to capture Cervantes. A gunfight ensued during the operation, resulting in his death.

In response, CJNG elements have initiated widespread blockades across six Mexican states.

Authorities have declared a “Code Red” mobilization as at least fifteen cities report cartel-linked unrest, a figure expected to rise as developments continue.

Good to see a cartel leader getting whacked. Unfortunately, that is usually the easier part. The fallout and ultimate splintering of the cartel is where the worst violence will erupt. Managing that is never easy.

According to several sources, including @LuisKuryaki with Pie de Nota, this morning’s operation in Jalisco which resulted in the elimination of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), known more commonly as El Mencho, was a joint operation carried out by U.S. and Mexican Special Forces.

People laugh when I say it's not worth going to Mexico just to save a few pesos on vacation. It's cheap for a reason.
