We’re looking to do do an October New England trip with kids. We’ve been to Maine before (Acadia, Portland, Camden) and loved it. I’m open to going back, but I am also interested in Vermont or New Hampshire.

Any recommendations? Depending on where we went, I suppose we’d fly into Boston, Portland, or maybe Burlington?

Looking for scenic towns to stay of any size…good outdoors…good food, shops, breweries, quaint towns, sight seeing, taking it easy, etc.

Basically, looking for an equivalent of Highlands or Cashiers type town … perhaps with mountains or abutting a river, ocean or lake?

Any help would be appreciated.

we loved the drive to North Conway and the Kancamagus Highway. Picked apples in Vermont and went to Vermont Country Store.

Kennebunkport, Maine is a nice community.

We flew into Boston and out of Portland this past October. Took in all of the states you mentioned. One night in Boston, one in NH, two in Stowe, and two in Maine. Even though I got deathly ill the first full day, we pressed on, and managed to have a good time. Will do this same itinerary again in the future. Flying out of the Portland airport was such a breeze too.

Portsmouth NH was a quaint town. Beautiful part of the country and only about an hour from Boston Logan

We went this fall, leaves were beautiful. Fly into Portland just makes everything easier. I would spend most of my time in Bar Habor, Acadia national park was beautiful and there are a lot of activities. Make sure and get reservations for Cadilac mountain, first sunrise in the continental US during the fall. Bring you a cup of coffee and watch the first sunrise to hit the state. We went to both White and Green mountains. Stayed at Brittonwood, that is where the Brittonwood accords were signed. That was the start of the IMF. There are several beautiful drives from there.

We've been to Stowe, VT a few times and have always really enjoyed it. Great restaurants, a really nice little downtown area to shop, get coffee, etc. We also really enjoyed the Von Trapp Family brewery which is very close (within 15 minutes). They have a nice tap room with good food and a great outdoor space to enjoy the weather.

Leaf peeping is really amazing there as well. Highly recommend.

We typically fly into Boston, and drive up to Portsmouth for the night or two. It's a nice town to walk around if you've never been.

We've been to Stowe a few times, Littleton, NH is nice, but weekday diner restaurants close early so it can be a jam to eat (we learned to eat dinner there at 5pm) Lincoln, NH was nice, but there seemed to be a hell of a lot of India H1B visas visiting last time....it was insane.

We love New England in the fall because it gets us out of the last ditch of Louisiana heat.

****Get the National Rental Car Executive membership if flying into Boston. That time of year the rental car lines are backed up and can take an hour or two just to get a car. Executive membership lets you walk out to the cars in the designated area, pick one out and drive off. Which is a HUGE timesaver. Some other companies offer similar deals, but I use National.

Highly recommend Vermont. Lovely State and good people. Stowe, Waterbury should be right up your alley. I’ve visited many times.

Will confide that Burlington has changed a bit. Still cool and worth a visit. I popped in last year for the first time in a few years and the downtown area frankly was a bit sketchy. Not sure if Vermont took the whole “defund the police” thing more seriously than others; but, the town square area had numerous homeless, addicts and panhandlers. Something I’ve not seen before.

We watched the same thing happened in Portland, OR. It's crazy, but a lot of it was caused by people who moved in from Cali and didn't really respect the clean, low-crime environment they were moving to. They basically subsidized homelessness and it exploded on them. Nobody has the guts to stand up to the crazies who support this stuff.

when we went to stowe/waterbury we were advised to avoid burlington, that was a few years ago. i dont think we missed anything anyway

our trip was providence>stowe>waterbury>woodstock>providence
providence airport might be the easiest flights we've ever taken

We’ll likely fly in and out of Burlington for proximity to Stowe/Waterbury.

I know they are pretty close to one another, but do you recommend the town and/or staying in Waterbury or Stowe. Is one better than the other or offer more attractions?

Well only be there 4 days, is it worth splitting up? Meaning, 2 days in Stowe and/orWaterbury and 2 days in Woodstock? Or, should we just focus on one of the two (Stowe and Waterbury vs Woodstock). Logistically, I don’t think it makes much sense to fly into Burlington and then drive directly to Woodstock. Also, driving back from Woodstock directly to Burlington to catch a flight, while not long, isn’t ideal.

Logistically, I’m thinking it may be best to stay and explore both Stowe and Waterbury for the short time (4days) that we’re there as opposed to cramming Woodstock in.

What do you think?

yes stay in Stowe and 4 days is perfect. The two towns are very close together so you’ll see everything.

Here’s a review of our trip

Perfect - thank you so much. Seriously. It’s greatly appreciated and that’s what we’re looking for…strolling around, taking it easy, wandering into shops, having good beer and food, enjoying the sights, outdoors and just unwinding
