Any pediatricians want to weigh in?

7 month old. Started a month ago with a swollen, very swollen finger tip. No fever, no tenderness. Go to doc, assumes bug bite. Leave, next few days swelling goes down. Then it comes back. When I say swollen, I mean like swollen to the point I’m worried it’s going to pop. But still no tenderness. Pediatrician is stumped. Orders x ray (nothing of note) and antibiotics. 10 days of antibiotics and it goes down. Three days later, it comes back with the thumb now doing it. Any help is appreciated. Obvs we going to pediatrician asap
ETA no tourniquet even after pediatrician examination.

Look for a fine hair wrapped around the finger. It’s amazing how hard those are to see.

getting into something.
Check what he/she is touching.

Appreciate that, but I think we ruled out tourniquet, as far as we know.

American doctor functions by trial and error, prescribing drugs that aren’t needed…not surprised.
You’re better off just using google or YouTube for answers.

Any chance the child could have sickle cell?

Just chop that finger off and call it a day

Prescribing antibiotics for a swollen thumb is next level dumb. Even an NP who got her MSN from an online degree mill would probably have enough foresight to know that inappropriate antibiotic use contributes to resistant strains of certain bacteria.

Are you absolutely sure the child is not sucking on their fingers, perhaps during sleep?

Is the kid crawling? Could they be touching something that they didn't have access to before? Any plants or pets?

His fingers/hands are covered during sleep. He sucks all his fingers and only the tips are swollen of middle finger and thumb

Have any pictures of it when it happens?

Not a pediatrician, but that sounds more like an allergic reaction. I had something similar happen, albeit not to my fingertips, when I started a new medication a few years ago.
