How can some phlebotomist techs draw blood with no pain

And others feel like they’re ramming a knitting needle in and leave a 3” black-yellow-blue-purple-red bruise that lasts a week?
I mean, damn.

Some people are better at their jobs than others
The ones at Ochsner main campus are outstanding
The ones at Ochsner St Bernard are hit or miss.

My wife used to do it a lot. She says it’s like any other skill. The more you practice the better you get.

Or the ones that don’t cause any pain but the bruise lasts 2-3 weeks
Like what the hell

Well that's not too bad. The Ochsner in Baton Rouge would probably amputate your arm.

Stop getting your blood drawn on bourbon street

I had one feel like they literally hit a nerve the last time.
Entire arm felt like it was slowly catching fire and then later in the day had weird nerve sensations for a day or two when I used the arm.

If you have a gnarly bruise, that means they’re probably infiltrated the vein, means the needle went right through the vein and out the back of it.
That’s happened to me before and my arm swelled up and I had a pretty nasty bruise for several days.

I had surgery on each eye a week apart last year. The first one I about jumped out of my chair when the nurse started the IV. The second one, different nurse and I didn't even feel it.

It’s always hit or miss.
But damn.
The best? Baton Rouge Clinic. Hands down.

Like any job.
Some people are better at it and want to be good and others don’t care enough to get better

I donate Whole Blood, Plasma and Platelets, most times at MD Andersons. I’ve never had a problem, but then again, my veins look like a garden hose. I tell them, if you miss that, you’re in the wrong job!

My GP had nurses that were so bad at it, I left him and found another one. And this was a guy I'd been going to since I was a kid.
Why have we not created a machine that can do this painlessly? With so much blood screening happening, it seems like we could have come up with a better system by now.

I've had blood drawn regularly for many years. It's amazing the different experiences I've gotten. The last time was bad and the person had been doing it for 10 years. About 10-20% of the time its almost like you cant tell anything is being done...the rest is average to bad experience.

I've taught a hundred phlebs. It takes 2 weeks to hire them, 2 weeks to train them, and 2 weeks to fire them.
Best thing is to know beforehand where to get stuck. I have giant veins in the middle of my arm, just as most people do. But they move and there is a nerve right under it. I point to the outside vein and tell them to stick there. If they disagree I ask for a different phlebotomist. Its really the only time in my life that I am an a hole. You can miss my vein, but you are not gonna miss where I did not tell you to stick.
The more to the inside, the more it is gonna hurt. Way back in the day when I unexpectedly had a heart attack a new phleb came in and stuck me on the inside of the arm. Terrible stick. Two days later when I stabilized my temp replacement came in and saw the result of the stick and went and fired him. From open heart surgery and all that it entails that sticks bruise was the last to clear up.
