The $10 million buyout number is extremely misleading...

Moscona and others in the media are throwing around this big number. It sounds like a massive, one-time check that LSU would have to cut at the beginning of March.
First off, it is not a lump sum payment. The contracts specifically say LSU pays this out in equal monthly installments over the rest of the years left on the deal. For McMahon, LSU is basically just paying a monthly bill for the next few years, not taking an 8 million dollar hit to the bank account all at once.
Even more important is the offset rule. The coaches have a legal duty to find new jobs. The second McMahon or any of the assistants get hired somewhere else, LSU gets to subtract that new salary from what they owe. If McMahon goes and gets a mid-major job for 500k a year, that is 500k LSU instantly wipes off the books.
Two of the assistants have a contract that ends this year.
That 10 million figure is the absolute max ceiling if every single one of those coaches stayed unemployed until 2029, which basically never happens in college sports. It is still expensive, but it is a manageable monthly expense that gets cheaper every time one of them gets a new gig. It is not the massive haul that some are making it out to be.

You are correct, and I can't tell if people are ignorant to the facts you laid out or for some reason BSing. Considering the money that's being shelled out over there this is peanuts. It would be insane to bring back Matt McMahon, and I trust there is no chance of that happening. Year 4 was already a slap in the face to LSU basketball fans. Year 5 would be confirming they don't give a damn, which I don't believe.

Looks like LSU will be paying the entire buyout for BK. It’s no guarantee that a coach will find another job

so 8 millionish is so much better cause we can pay it monthly and then hire a new guy that's nearly equally shitty?

McMahon is about to turn 48. He will find another job.

From our AI friends:
LSU men's basketball head coach Matt McMahon would be owed approximately $6.5 million if fired without cause this spring. His contract, which runs through June 30, 2029, stipulates a buyout equal to 80% of his remaining base salary and supplemental compensation.
Buyout Structure & Projections
The total buyout cost varies depending on when the contract is terminated. The following table estimates the buyout amount if dismissed after specific seasons, based on reports from Sportscasting and On3:
Season End
Estimated Buyout Amount:
Spring 2026 $6.5M – $7.44M
2026–27 $5.04M
2027–28 $2.56M
Key Contract Terms
Total Payout Components: Unlike many contracts that only cover base salary, McMahon’s buyout includes 80% of his supplemental compensation for media and promotional duties.
Staff Buyouts: Terminating the entire coaching staff could push the total athletic department obligation closer to $10 million.
Mitigation: The buyout includes a standard offset clause, meaning if McMahon secures another coaching job, LSU's remaining obligation would be reduced by his new salary.
Coach Resignation: If McMahon were to leave voluntarily for another position before June 30, 2026, he would owe LSU $2 million in liquidated damages.

So waiting a year really only saves us about 15 dollars.

He'll get a mid major job tomorrow. He's just not cut out for the power 5

I absolutely detest that this idiot got rich from a terrible decision by the LSU administration…didn’t deserve to coach at this level and never will again

I thought that # was BS. Found the contract and it's pretty close not counting mitigation.
Matt McMahon Contract
LSU pays McMahon based on the Fiscal Year; not per season; so his contract years run from July 1 - June 30
Remaining Contract ($400,000 per year base salary)
July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026 = ~$1,015,000 ($2,900,000 prorated with about 4 months and change left)
July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 = $3,000,000
July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2028 = $3,100,000
July 1, 2028 through June 30, 2029 = $3,200,000

The current administration and decision makers absolutely care about the brand LSU has created and the basketball program is only damaging that brand.

Thanks, I had scrolled down to the Supplemental Pay part, and missed this. I thought it seemed too long. So you can take out FY29-30.

Paid out over 39 months is roughly $200,000 per month IF he doesn't get another job. His new job will reduce this significantly.
