Sen. April Weaver, R-Brierfield, the Senate
sponsor of the legislation, said she was moved to do so after horrific sex crimes against children that came to light in Bibb County last year.

“With the signing of the Child Predator Death Penalty Act, we are putting these sick individuals on notice that a cell on death row awaits them if they abuse the most innocent and defenseless among us,” Weaver said.

As much as I agree with the sentiment, this was already ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS in Kennedy v. Louisiana.

Politicians love to pass these virtue signaling laws that end up being litigated and costing tax payers tons of money for no return on that money.

I figured this was coming. Doesn't change the fact that it's unconstitutional.

Well, at least you didn't hide the fact you're a pedo.

Correct, the Supreme Court already ruled on this. Louisiana had the death penalty for child rape up until that ruling, was around 25 years ago.

Some guy in Harvey raped his 7 year old step daughter, LA gave him the death penalty, Supreme Court said it violated his 8th amendment. Can only give the death penalty for someone's death.

At least you didn't hide the fact that you labeled me a pedo for stating a fact

It's an odd reaction to immediately call it unconstitutional. You also didn't deny you're a pedo. Hopefully you aren't actually a coach

These types of crimes should have the harshet penalties allowed.

I could never understand how you could go to prison for 20+ years selling pot, but a person could sexually abuse a minor or a child, and get off with probation or 5 years.

Insane that is still the case in a lot of places

Then it'll be a great day when it's brought before the current SCOTUS and upheld. Stare Decisis is crap. If it's a bad ruling then keep bringing the issue back when the court makeup is different. We've made tremendous strides in gun and property rights and reversed the worst ruling in history, Roe v. Wade, because good people wouldn't take bad rulings as the final answer.

And this will end up back at SCOTUS. Without a progressive majority that shot it down in Kennedy v. Louisiana, citing "racial bias", because of course they did.

Why? Multiple states have done this over the years and it always gets shot down by the feds. This is just political pandering.

I have not, do not, and never will have sex with a child. Satisfied?
