New Orleans police chief and mayor change rules regarding ICE cooperation

The New Orleans Police Department has repealed a decade-old policy that broadly limited the agency’s cooperation with federal immigration agents, a significant concession by Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration to federal officials’ ongoing immigration crackdown, attorneys and officials say.
NOPD policy now directs officers to remand people with “detainers” — alerts issued when someone has an outstanding federal warrant or immigration violation — to federal custody if the local jail won’t hold them.
The policy also strips out past language affirming that enforcement of civil immigration laws falls solely to federal law enforcement. And it removes prohibitions on officers sharing a broad range of data with federal immigration agents, according to immigration lawyers who reviewed the changes.
So glad the city is done with the consent decree

Something positive coming from NO for a change!

Cubbies is saying this is akin to French citizens cooperating with Nazis

“How I read this is, if NOPD arrests someone and sees they have a civil immigration detainer, they’re going to bring them to OPSO,” said Jeremy Jong, a New Orleans-based immigration attorney.
“If OPSO says, ‘Why would I take this person? They’re not accused of any crime,’ then they go back to NOPD, and NOPD holds them for ICE.”

What great news! This is really important in and of itself, but it shows a willingness for Moreno to use common sense and go against the far-left group think which would be more politically expedient for her in the Dem party!
I have to admit, I was very skeptical of Moreno. I remember her cartoonish talking points from 8 years ago when she was still running on equal pay for women legislation.
But this is the second significant positive sign from her as mayor. The first was when she announced that the city department of streets (or whatever its called, would start fixing streets and sidewalks and doing basic repairs that THEY HAD NOT DONE since before the last administration. It had all been contracted out, even though they have in-house employees and materials to do the job!
And sure enough, I saw city employees fixing potholes on St. Charles Avenue this past week, in the area between riverbend and the universities. It was so refreshing after seeing thise holes fo years!

“It NOPD arrests someone…”
So they weren’t arrested due to the “civil detainer”, they had other charges?
An important point to side-step, Mr. Lying Civil Rights Attorney.

Moreno has been a pleasant surprise so far, all things considered

NOPD isn't going to arrest people for no reason. They would have to have broken or be suspected of Class 1 felony at the least. They aren't going on S.Carrollton area and knocking on doors

This is a much welcomed start for Mrs. Moreno.

As liberal as Moreno is, she does have a practical streak to her.

Oh shite, the uptown liberals are about to go nuclear with their porch signs.

FWIW typically ICE detainers come once local LEO informs ICE they have someone they believe to not be a US citizen. If NOPD picks someone up and they already have an ICE detainer for them, it would mean they've done something pretty serious in the past.
This seems like the bare minimum any LEO should do.
