over helmet honoring war dead.

LINK

Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified after refusing to remove a “Memory Helmet” honoring Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed in the war.

The IOC said the helmet violated Rule 50, which bans political statements at Olympic events, and told him he could only compete if he switched to a plain helmet or wore a black armband instead.

Heraskevych said the helmet wasn’t political and that he wouldn’t “betray” the people he was honoring. Ukraine’s government and President Zelenskyy criticized the IOC’s decision, calling it a shameful moment. Heraskevych plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Translated from Ukrainian
I propose to end this scandal.

I never wanted a scandal with the IOC, and I did not create it. The IOC created it with its interpretation of the rules, which many view as discriminatory.
Although the IOC's actions have made it possible to loudly speak about Ukrainian athletes who have been killed, at the same time the very fact of the scandal distracts a tremendous amount of attention away from the competitions themselves and from the athletes participating in them. Therefore, I once again propose to end the scandal.
I request:
1. Lift the ban on the use of the “Memory Helmet”.
2. Apologize for the pressure that has been put on me over the past few days.
3. As a sign of solidarity with Ukrainian sport, provide electric generators for Ukrainian sports facilities that are suffering from daily shellings.

I very much hope for a response before the start of the skeleton competitions.

Let the man skeleton.

Rule 50, which bans political statements at Olympic events

The Olympics have been a hot bed for political statements for decades. We just had the American make political statement and he wasn't suspended.

I guess this was just the guys airing out their sweaty pits.

I hope the athlete wins.

I agree with the sentiment here but he can easily have this somewhere else. Just wear the plain helmet and then you can have a flag or t-shirt before/after you compete with these people being honored

They gave him every opportunity to figure out another way to honor the deceased. The dude was asking to be DQ’d. If you allow this, get ready for pride flags covering every helmet and uniform. The rules are clear.

Yeah I respect him sticking to his guns for something he feels so deeply about.

Idk anything about him and his abilities, this may have been the plan all along. You get much more notoriety out of this action than you do if you finish 12th

They said in the coverage earlier that he was expected to be in the running for a medal.

I get his convictions, and there’s some respect in that I guess. But I’m not sure it’s worth ruining what you’ve trained for years (or the majority of your life) for. Especially when it’s a very specific rule with seemingly other options to honor what you’re trying to honor. But congrats to him for the clicks and like, I suppose.

Can anyone tell me why Russia and Belarus aren't invited, without violating rule 50

Apparently not. We had members of our figure skating team wearing gay/trans pride pins on their uniform jackets at the competition. Funny how they didn't have an issue with that.

While I agree with this, the helmet in question just has a bunch of random images of people painted on it. There's nothing overtly political about it for people to notice.

He should have just ditched the helmet and done something else, but this seems like a pretty rigid enforcement of the rules.

One again...jackets are not the actual uniform they compete in. It comes down to him wanting to wear it during the actual race. After seeing the helmet, I can see why they disqualified him. Lots of athletes would be putting stuff all over lots of stuff. They made the correct call.
