Remember what greed took from us.

Arkansas looking to get out of the SWC was really the first domino.

TV contracts/money were starting to make being an Independent cost prohibitive

Those two things made it easier for conferences to ‘expand’.

Hopefully when society collapses we can get back to that some day

I was at a party a few months ago and met a retired coach from one of the Big8 schools. I asked him what he thought of Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC. He did not like it at all - said things were much better when Texas was in the SWC and Oklahoma in the Big8.

Just need to create the Big East and have the Metro start playing football and it would be perfect.

I knew fsu was independent back then, but had no clue there was no big east football conference in 1990. I’m 44 and started paying attention to college football around 94

Crazy thinking that at one time the Big Ten and Pac Ten conferences actually had ten teams. It's like it was logical.

I clicked thinking this was going to be a post about what games actually looked like. It’s actually pretty wild to see how awful and grainy games from the 90s were when we actually thought they were pretty good resolution at the time.

What a leap we’ve made in terms of high definition.

Sorry, not to hijack your topic

Or Penn State joining the Big10… the independents joining conferences changed everything

I must have memory holed a bunch of those teams being independent. Definitely don’t remember VT and West Virginia being Independent.

Arkansas and South Carolina have been in the SEC for more than half my life, and I still consider them expansion schools

The demise of the PAC 10 /12 is a national tragedy. Still shocking that happened. One of the great institutions in American sports with a legacy more than a century old just collapsed almost overnight.

That will be looked at as the moment the sport really turned.

The SEC should have brought back Tulane to pair with South Carolina instead of Arkansas back in 91’. This would have leveled the East and West divisions with both having a “nerd” school. That was the first domino, then the “merger” of the Big 8 and the SWC to make the big 12, the precursor to the super conferences. This was a ripple effect for the other Texas schools.

I could be wrong, but I think I read somewhere that converting the old games to digital distorts the quality a bit. While it was not nearly as clear as today, it wasn't as bad as it appears on Youtube these days.

I will never get used to Oklahoma or Texas being in the SEC.
