NY Times: It’s Time for America to Admit That It Has a Marijuana Problem

Thirteen years ago, no state allowed marijuana for recreational purposes. Today, most Americans live in a state that allows them to buy and smoke a joint. President Trump continued the trend toward legalization in December by loosening federal restrictions.
This editorial board has long supported marijuana legalization. In 2014, we published a six-part series that compared the federal marijuana ban to alcohol prohibition and argued for repeal. Much of what we wrote then holds up — but not all of it does.
At the time, supporters of legalization predicted that it would bring few downsides. In our editorials, we described marijuana addiction and dependence as “relatively minor problems.” Many advocates went further and claimed that marijuana was a harmless drug that might even bring net health benefits. They also said that legalization might not lead to greater use.
It is now clear that many of these predictions were wrong. Legalization has led to much more use. Surveys suggest that about 18 million people in the United States have used marijuana almost daily (or about five times a week) in recent years. That was up from around six million in 2012 and less than one million in 1992. More Americans now use marijuana daily than alcohol.
This wider use has caused a rise in addiction and other problems. Each year, nearly 2.8 million people in the United States suffer from cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, which causes severe vomiting and stomach pain. More people have also ended up in hospitals with marijuana-linked paranoia and chronic psychotic disorders. Bystanders have also been hurt, including by people driving under the influence of pot.

Gee, who coulda seen this coming?

Just treat it like cigarettes. No one would care if people weren't doing it in public a whole lot and making others smell it. It's better for you than alcohol, other than the social development piece, where alcohol is amazing.
Legalize, tax, enforce like cigarettes are enforced in places like New York. 21 years old and can't do it in public.

Jesus said “The poor you shall have with you always….” and that’s also true of folks who have chemical addictions and who have poor impulse control.
We’ve made it easier for that segment of society to maximize their shittiness.

What i do on my own land in the middle of nowhere is no one else's concern.
In public, I follow the social contract to abide.

I've been convinced that teenagers and marijuana don't mix. Prefrontal cortex development is real. For every anecdote about "well, I went to high school with a kid who smoked weed every day and he graduated with honors," there are 10 or 15 kids who became losers along the way and lowered their acheivement ceiling.
When I started community college and looked at my high school transcript, the point when I stopped making all As and Bs matched up perfectly with point when I started smoking weed everyday.

Jesus also intoxicated people with Wine, so there's that.

No matter what I tell them, they don’t stop smoking and keep coming back.

Why do people hate criticisms of something that is clearly causing an epidemic upon young males in this country?

Alcohol was essential to the survival of humanity in many places. It was much much safer to drink "wine" than it was water. The alcohol level in those fermented drinks back then would have been extremely low.
Smoking weed was not and has never been essential to survival

The NYT has an issue with personal liberty? No way…
I’m not willing to lock human beings in cages because they consumed a substance and committed no offense against anyone. There’s nothing anyone can say to convince me that we should lock human beings in cages for that.

Whoever invents an accurate spot-test for marijuana intoxication while driving is going to be a very rich person.
