Why? The NBA has never been better.

The league is horrible. NBA is unwatchable.
Total trash product.

Why?
Money
The Owners each get free cash when they expand, and they are getting two new expansion franchises.

Two things recently happened that clarified the financials and gave the owners extra incentive to expand. 1) The Lakers sold for $10 billion. 2) The NBA’s new media rights deal kicked in this season.
Even if an expansion team is only worth half the value of the marquee Lakers, that’s still $5B, and the NBA is expected to set the expansion fee somewhere around that $5B valuation for each team
An extra two teams will dilute the TV revenue pool. That’s one of the downsides of expansion for existing owners. That decrease is roughly only $15 million per season.
That means the owners will give up $15 million each season, but in return, they each get an immediate payment of over $330 million.

I feel like there is not enough talent spread throughout the league to support two new teams.

Nobody I know in Stagecoach even knows the NBA exists¹

This is true, but only if you don't like watching basketball.

They should outlaw dribbling. Just have players run basket to basket, chucking slop at the rim. The most theatrical flopper is awarded free throws. One guy is designated the Draymond, kinda like the Snitch in Quidditch, except his role is to flagrantly foul the ball carrier and yell at referees.

Seattle has a new stadium and they want the Supersonics back there and they want a team in Las Vegas for the money.
Crazy that in a very short period, Las Vegas will go from no professional teams to having teams for all 4 major sports.

Pels should make Zion available in the expansion draft

If the Board of Governors announces the expansion at its meetings this summer, you'll almost certainly not see those expansion teams take the court until the fall of 2028, which means expansion draft AFTER the 2027-2028 season, more than 2 years from now.
It will be even longer if they just announce the decision to expand, and then allow an application period for cities/potential owners and run it through an expansion committee process.
There are no other real contenders other than Seattle and Las Vegas, though.
