Its analogous to us using "America" instead of "United States of America"

That's not as bad as when Burma became Myanmar. 1989

Here's why!
Been 3 times. Amazingly beautiful country. Prague is my favorite city in the world based upon the places I've been to.

The Name "Czechia": Background and Usage
Historical Roots of the Name

The term "Czechia" is not a recent invention. It has existed in both Czech and English since at least the 19th century, reflecting a long-standing linguistic tradition.

Official Recognition
In 2016, "Czechia" was officially approved as the country's short name and registered with the United Nations. This formal recognition established "Czechia" as an appropriate designation for the nation alongside its official title.

Intended Use
The short name "Czechia" is intended for use in practical contexts such as maps, international sports events, branding, and everyday conversation. However, it is not meant to replace "Czech Republic" in official or legal documents, where the formal name remains appropriate.

Motivation for Adoption
The primary motivation for adopting "Czechia" was practical. The term "Czech Republic" is considered cumbersome and is frequently confused with the former country, Czechoslovakia.

Pinot noir, caviar,
mid-sized car, Myanmar

It was Czechoslovakia before splitting into Czechia (i.e. Czech Republic) and Slovakia.

Most recent change to sporcle recognized countries were Sudan splitting into South Sudan and Sudan in 2011. We don’t see a lot of new countries and redrawn lines like we did prior to the WWs.

I don’t get it because it’s not like they ever called their country “the Czech Republic” in their own language anyways. So who even said that name was retired? Isn’t it completely arbitrary what we refer to them as in English?

Sounds too much like Chechnya.

Also, isn't Turkey now Türkiye?

There's an official "long" and "short" name. Czechia has been their choice for short.

The vast majority of UN member countries have a long and short name. Czechia is what appears, e.g., on Google Maps and has for many years.

Names are crazy. Did you know Rhode Island until 2020 was actually "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations"?

I legitimately would have guessed Czechoslovakia was still a country before these Olympics.

That's legitimately sad. Thanks for keeping Bama stereotypes alive and well.
