Nothing left at that level for NDSU anymore, too many schools have left and it was becoming difficult for NDSU to even schedule a relevent non-conference schedule. Can only play the Montana schools so many times.

Did seeing JMU’s success, and to a lesser extent App State, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, and even Kennesaw St have people in Fargo feeling anxious? No reason NDSU shouldn’t be a top G5 team year in and out if those places are doing it considering most seasons NDSU are top 25ish in the combined Sagarin and Massey rankings.

The whole concept of the FCS is on life support. I think FCS schools will either need to make the move to FBS or drop to DIII in the near future.

The lower tier of FCS is absolute crap.

Missouri State won 7 games and made a bowl in year 1 last season and they were at best an average FCS program last few years.

If Mizzou State can do it, anyone can.

I would expect South Dakota St and both Montana and Montana St to follow.

But I would rather win a national title than fight to get into some random bowl game.

I'd much rather be a big fish in a small pond.

Winning national championships at the FCS level has got to be way more fun than being a 9-3 team in the Big12 or wherever they'll end up.

You say that, but apparently that isn't the case for lots of programs.

Look at the Sun Belt.
Ga Southern, 6 FCS titles.
App State, 3 FCS titles.
JMU, 2 FCS titles.
Marshall, 2 FCS titles.
Even ULM won one in the 80s.

You can find more teams in other G5 conferences, they apparently would rather have FBS money than win at the FCS level.

Sam Houston State thinks this is a dumb decision.

Moving up for money reasons is even dumber. Are they not paying attention to these other G5 schools financials?

I think it would only be worth it if they took some of their FCS rivals with them. NDST, SDST, Montana, and Montana St all moving up would turn the MWC into a mini North Western Sunbelt.

There is a whole division between FCS and DIII. Why would they skip DII?

NDSU isn't Sam Houston State

It's not about money, it is about what the FCS has become and where NDSU wants to go as a program. A lot of people just watch the FCS playoffs and think how great it is but in reality the regular season is mostly awful for schools like NDSU. We have few peers and anyone that gets good leaves. It was time to go.

It is a factor, App State started it and it has just built from there. Almost all of those schools have done well and the void they left was never filled. FCS football is a shell of what it once was in the southeast, I loved playing GSU and Coastal in the playoffs.
