They're not that good.
Good bourbon or rye, couple rocks. Good scotch, drop of water. Good red wine with a steak or italian meal. Now that's a cocktail.

ETA: those young men in the Air Corps hitting the two whiskey shots before bomber runs in WWII were brave and that simply provided some possible clarity to function.
