61 and floated with HMM-164(C) on the USS Okinawa.

When I was in high school ('82) Vietnam seemed like a lifetime ago. I remember driving around in the 2000s and it struck me that Desert Storm was further back in history for those high schoolers than Vietnam was for me. Hit like a thunderbolt.

I’ll never forget buying a So Damn Insane (saddam hussain) T shirt from Walmart in Zachary during Desert Storm.

I also stuffed a couple of crank baits into my ICEE and walked out the door.

Yep. I thought you were going to say he was too old to be wearing that and I sadly was coming to correct you.

A friend of mine's sister is married to a guy who is a marine and he served in Desert Storm, which was soon after he enlisted then served in Afghanistan from early 2002 to I think 2012 or 2013ish.. Went back for under a year in 2015.. Now is a contractor for the Navy. I talked to him a few months ago and he was telling me this. And when I asked what he did for the Navy he said he gets paid to let the navy think they are outsmarting a marine. He is 55, which when you said 54.. reminded me of that.

Same for me…I graduated in 83 and it seemed like Vietnam had ended in the distant past!

The year I spent in Vietnam (1969) is closer in time to the beginning of World War 1 than it is to the current year, 2026.

51 and I did GWOT like a mother fricker.

Yeah, I’m legit old and it’s kinda fricking with me. We all start off invincible and while I’m still in amazing shape, and have decent energy, I am starting to feel old.

Not going to lie, I was expecting to see "Vietnam" on his hat.

Vietnam guys have taken the place of WWII and Korea, Desert Storm is the new Vietnam, and GWOT is the new Desert Storm.

55 was when I went downhill. At 55 I would still say “good once as I ever was”. It wasn’t true, of course, but it felt like it. The dropoff from then to my current 63 is a lot. Still very active, but I have to work out like a fiend just to feel good.
