Visual spatial skills lacking among a particular pilot cohort.

Just sayin’

Not sure how you miss the huge airliner lit up like a Christmas tree coming in hot from your left but what do I know. I just have a penis.

Is there not collision warning systems in aircraft?

But yeah the helo was visible for a spit second right before impact

Curious if the obviously-black-voiced controller still has his job.

He was the guy that kept asking if the helo had the crj in sight while watching them head towards each other on his scope.

At some point you gotta override.

Yeah I’m need to go back and listen to it again. Listening while sitting in traffic.

But I agree that had to look off to that guy in ATC

Maybe. But 0.00% of any transcript from either the Heli or TC was a woman as far as I heard. Which was honestly not what I was expecting. It was all men. As if it even mattered

I believe they were looking at the wrong aircraft through their goggles. They were confirming they had the crk in sight but it was actually off to their left.

My interpretation anyway. To me, the crj would have had a better viewung angle but not sure how well lot up that helicopter is.

It's an animation from the Helo, as the video begins. With dual verbiage on a split screen in text below. It's not what I expected anyway. I never heard the male in the bird, ATC or anyone say divert or anything. Almost like it was a tech disaster unforeseen

When video starts at 8:45:00, Helo is at 210 feet.

At 8:45:30, helo has drifted up to 400 feet.

Instructor says you're at 300 feet come down for me. (not sure about 100 foot difference between what he sees and what video shows)

At 8:47:00 helo is at 230 feet (down 170 from when instructor requested) but never goes lower than that.

By 8:47:30, helo is back up to 320 feet (up 90 feet)

At 8:47:58 collison occurs with helo at 280 feet.

IF Helo would have stayed at the 230 foot altitude that it was OR stayed at the 320 feet that it drifted back up to, it would have passed under or over the plane even on the collision path.

The pilot operating the helicopter was a woman. Her instructor, the male, was operating radios.

Right. Totally verified. So, what's the disconnect here? Her, instructor, ATC or plane? Eerie scene nonetheless, but this seems like a cluster.

For example, do inbound aircraft put on night vision goggles as they navigate approach to Reagan? Give me an animated video of Plane 1 with zero windshield obstruction, no goggles, clear ATC COMMS and a couple of dudes riding the bird down not seeing/hearing about a single obstruction

Planes arriving over Potomac are typically approaching Runway 1. They swung the Regional Jet out to Runway 33 at the same time the helo was maneuvering around East Potomac Park and they lost visual.

Helo got complacent

So, ATC "swung" what?

My guess is the night vision goggles. It is tunnel vision. This video does not simulate those accurately. I believe, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, both people in the front seats are supposed to be scanning because of the limited visibility through night vision.

I know a guy who used to fly Marine One, flew Ospreys and now flies for a major carrier. He said he used to fly this route frequently. It sounded to me like it was always an accident waiting to happen.

Supposedly there were audio transmission issues so they only heard “PAT CRJ”
