Could "Coach Prime" be the spark the Dawg Pound desperately needs? On Monday's ESPN First Take, Stephen A. Smith didn’t just suggest it, he embraced the chaos.
Reacting to the vacancy in Cleveland, Smith declared, "I hope it happens," as he discussed the possibility of Deion Sanders taking the reins for the Browns.
With son Shedeur Sanders set to be firmly in the mix for the starting quarterback job in 2026, the narrative is irresistible. Smith knows it's a longshot, but noted that the Browns need a culture shift that only a personality like the senior Sanders can provide.
The Prime Case for Cleveland:
The "Family Business" Advantage- Reunited with Shedeur, Sanders brings an instant, unbreakable QB-Coach chemistry. The two have produced plenty of success at two stops in college football together.
Culture Shock- Sanders doesn’t just coach; he recruits, markets, and wins headlines. He would turn the Browns into the "center of the football universe." Something that would intrigue owner Jimmy Haslam.
The Reality Check:
The Jump to the Pros- Success in Boulder,CO is one thing, but navigating NFL schemes and veteran egos is a different beast. If wins don't come quickly, then Sanders overly outgoing personality may wear thin fast.
The Media Circus- The younger Sanders created enough distraction on his own through the press as a rookie. Adding his Hall of Fame father to the mix could result in a relentless 24/7 pressure cooker.
Smith admits that Sanders' coaching resume "doesn't warrant it (NFL head coach job)," but the move would break the internet. Whether it would wind up being a stroke of genius or a disastrous gamble, one thing is certain...it would be must see TV.
For the Browns? Not a terrible gamble

Well clearly that's what NFL franchises should strive for.

16-21 screams promotion to NFL head coach if you ask me

It would be more interesting than Jim Schwartz going 5-12 then 4-13 then getting fired.

It is the Browns. They aren’t a normal franchise. Whoever they hire will have a .01% chance of success. No decent candidate wants the job.
Jerry Jones has made billions by turning a successful franchise into a circus sideshow. Jimmy Haslam has a better shot of following that blueprint, than the Robert Kraft blueprint of multiple Super Bowl runs.

I could see it, wouldn't be an bad idea, trade for Travis Hunter somehow. Myles Garrett would probably cream his pants, i'm all for it.

I say do it. Finally prove he’s not a good head coach

how long until the Browns retire Shadeur's number?

Please do, that way when he and his son fail miserably they'll both be out of the league and the spotlight for good.

Hey it worked for Kliff.

At least Kliff is an offensive guru. Deion does nothing except cheerlead and bring rappers and his buddies to the sideline (if the team is winning).

Nothing says a coach is ready for a bigger job like going 1-8 in conference play in 2 out of 3 seasons at his current job
And hasn't Deion been dealing with some health issues? At least they'll have the built in excuse when its a dumpster fire and he has to "step away" from coaching.

Kliff at least was viewed as an offensive mastermind and was viewed as a QB guru after coaching Keenum, Manziel, Mahomes, and Mayfield.

Prime could reach these young men in a way that Schwartz never could.

What a stupid fricking take.
