On many homes, new and older, it appears that ventless fire places were installed. Is this because of cost, or is it because the ventless gas fireplaces put off heat better?

Ventless are great heaters.

Both.

Also a lot of flexibility with locating a ventless box vs designing the home around a vented one (or wood burning).

I have a ventless and use it anytime the temps drop but I still don't understand how I can burn a natural gas fire indoors without getting CO poisoning. Am I dumb or are you supposed to crack a window when using it?

I have wondered the same thing.

I am curious to know also.

I built a home entertainment center with a ventless fireplace in it several years ago to supplement my heat pump. It puts out a lot of heat. I usually only need to run it 10 to 15 minutes at a time. To be safe I installed a carbon monoxided detector and I crack a window just a little.

Different burners for 99% combustion. They also have a sensor that shuts it down when oxygen level gets too low.

As a backup, I have carbon monoxide detectors since my house is heated with gas.
Thermostat shuts it off when it gets to desired temp so it’s not running constantly.

Right. Ventless are so efficient. I have a CO monitor on top of mine and its never registered.

My best friend swears his vented gas fireplace takes heat out of the house

Have ventless and hate it. Never use it. Stinks up the house and I constantly worry about CO poisoning.

Same. My wife begs me to use it but it has a smell and I refuse. If I could find someone to service it I’d feel better but that doesn’t exist. Nobody does it. One day I’ll rip the shite out and put an electric one just for ambiance haha

No, you do not need to have a window cracked when you run ventless gas logs. They are designed to have the flue damper closed….that is the benefit, because they produce exponentially more heat when it is not all going up the chimney. They should have built-in oxygen sensor that shuts the flame down when oxygen level gets too low. If there is anything that burns your eyes or any sooting of the logs, you should have them serviced.

Any house that is not all-electric should have carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, too.

Another option- I'm building soon and I'm going electric. It never gets cold enough in LA to enjoy the fireplace for more that 20 minutes without the house getting too hot.

I just want the fireplace look and watch the "flames" without the heat.

If you get dish network for your cable service, you can put your tv on the fireplace channel and do away with the fireplace all together!

I’ve got a ventless and every time I’ve used it, the house smells terrible. It puts out a lot of heat but also a ton of humidity

Mine smells awful as well. Gives everyone in the house a headache. Really frustrating because I’d love to use it.

You have to keep it clean, that could be it. Dust buildup will cause a smell when burning. I take mine apart and vacuum the shite out of it with the brush attachment every year before using. That has been the difference between smell and no smell for me, at least.

I had a wall heater for a while. Didn't like the way it made the house smell and it did seem to add a lot of moisture to the home. The windows rained condensation. Plenty of fresh air is key I think.

If you ask Indoor Air Quality "experts", they want nothing to do with ventless gas heat.
