Why are part time referee’s held to such a high standard?

The Kentucky basketball thread got me thinking, why are holding these people that most of which ref 4-5 games a week and make $250 or less a week to such a high standard?
The issue is that we should be expecting them to not be very good. We should expect them to miss calls. If there is only 1-2 ref’s on a field or court they will things.
We should be teaching our kids that they need to be good enough to win by overcoming 2-3 bad calls because they are going to benefit from bad calls also.

Are you talking about rec League?
College refs make way, way more than that

I'm thinking the college refs make more like $50k a year

Yeah not college ref’s, they have full crews, often have replay, etc. Are they not also a full time job?

College refs still have full time jobs, some still ref high school games

You think most of these tantrums are actually based on objectively bad calls and not just the fact it went against their team?

The better question is why does a billion dollar business hire low paid part time scrubs for such an important job?

Definitely not. I've worked with officials in SEC baseball and football and they all had normal Monday through Friday jobs and then would call games on weekends.

Again, I’m not talking about college. They have much larger crews, much more experience, and instant replay.
I’m talking rec league to HS.
But given your scenario, there’s almost no reason a college ref couldn’t be a full time ref. Ref college and HS, throw in some middle school and you can make a decent living.
If you WANT to do more, that’s on the ref. But NCAA could easily make it a ‘full time job’.
ETA: I’m seeing college football ref’s make $2000-3000/ game. You could easily schedule 2 college games a week, 1 HS game, a middle school, etc. I get that’s a lot, but if you can squeeze out $75k for a Aug-Jan job I don’t want to hear any complaints about pay for a seasonal 30 hours a week

That’s my point. It doesn’t matter. They shouldn’t be expected to be perfect, bad calls against your team should be expected

I only ask that they call it both ways.

Rec Leagues make less than that. Arguing with refs is usually pointless. Parents and players get way too worked up in these games. Missed calls happen. They’re not intentional.

Bc they have no accountability, at least in the BR area
They can be as crappy as they want to be, clearly influencing games , and they aren’t even graded. They think they are high and mighty…. Regularly they approach the coach and institute argument, and when coach comes back, T them up. It’s ridiculous
Delrie(both dad and son), and the bald headed old white guy (not Summers - who although likes for everyone to know he’s in charge, isn’t bad) are the worst.
Throw in the bald headed light skinned black guy with glasses ( who oh by the way, was in prison for years for dealing cocaine- do they do background checks?) who spends more time arguing with fans, instigating that, and then wants to throw them out.
You ref a JV/varsity doubleheader, and make $140 for 3 hours, plus travel. Not bad money tbh
I know there are refs that list here- so go ahead and give me your excuses

He’s referencing the Kentucky middle school game.

The important thing is they have to go get Jesse and tase Ryan.

No amount of experience, no amount of games, no amount of high intense situations can result in perfect calls in real time every time on the spot then factor in no replay in rec league and travel ball in high school.

The refs in our game today with Ole Miss were absolute garbage. This isn't the usual "crazy arse Kentucky fan" take I know some of you are immediately thinking as you read my post and roll your eyes. Feel free to rewatch the game. We won. And our collective arse as a fanbase is still chapped at just how horrendous they were. It was above and beyond the usual bad calls here and there today that you'd typically expect to read fans bitching about. Today's crew at Rupp was terrible at a level I can't recall having seen in many moons. The bitching is absolutely warranted.

Any coach who feels the need to argue with refs and officials below a HS varsity level is displaying a losing mentality. Your travel ball team didn’t lose because of the umpire’s strike zone. Your rec basketball team didn’t lose because of a controversial blocking foul late in the game.
