Not surprising. It was an absolutely beautiful restaurant with an amazing wine list, but it was way too big of a space and never full enough. The food was fine but never wowed me.

LOL, Michelin had it on their recommended list. I ate there a couple of times and actually liked the food and concept. But both times the place was pretty empty.

Yeah. I liked it. It wasn't a place I was wowed by but I liked it.

But the place was MASSIVE and never full, even on weekends

Seemed DOA to me - pricey Portuguese food in the CBD with late hours seemed like an odd concept. Considered trying it out several times but reviews always put me off.

Hopefully something better takes its place. A lot of empty restaurant space in that area currently, not great.

Yeah that "SouthMarket District" is a failure. Nothing is staying around there. They were betting on everyone moving to condos downtown as a trend and that really hasn't worked out.

It sounds like they will take sometime off and put a new concept in there.

Good luck, its such a large space in that location.

Place just didn't make any sense really.

Went once and sat at the bar for drinks and a bite. Perusing the menu, I just couldn't figure out how one would make an actual meal out of what they were serving. Got overly perturbed by the insessant attempt to upsell us on the "grade" of the tiny bites of Spanish ham we wanted to possibly sample.

I mean that is how jamon works though

That isn't unusual.

I understand. It was just sort of the way they were "pitching" it all that just came across as a bit overbearing.

Probably because they were bleeding money and were instructed to go all out on upcharges

Just spitballing...

I wonder if he would bring back the Delmonico/Steakhouse concept to that location?

I went a couple times and really enjoyed it. Great wine list. The food was really good and unique but ultimately nothing that would wow you. Some of the dishes were bad values, like the iberico plate. Service was great, but they weren’t that busy.

Definitely some truth to this. It was really catered to groups of 4 or so that wanted to share a bunch of stuff and not get too caught up splitting up the bill. Not ideal for a lunch or quick dinner.

He makes this sort of work with Meril. I couldn't really figure out the need or market for a higher end, more sort of ethnically specific (although it seemed to really miss on that end as well) version of that.

That location could probably do well with a steakhouse, even though we’re sort of inundated with them on the whole.

Think either that or some hot shot star chasing chef could come in and do a tasting menu restaurant there.

Space is WAY too large for a tasting menu type place.

Saint X brew/BBQ place just closed last week. I find it odd how some places make it and some don't down there. Willa Jean and the Tacos del Cartel seem to do ok.

Not surprising. Went a few times as well. Always empty. The dressing on their “lettuce” was fantastic though. I Wouldn’t mind getting that recipe.

I lived in this area for a handful of years, you have to be trendy to survive. Outside of the Virgin hotel, there is not enough down there to really pull the crowds going to the trendy places in the WHD/CBD like Chandelier bar, Jolie, Pelican Lounge, Ace, at area. Dim lighting, music, maybe some fancy LED lighting. Maybe a light Tapas menu. Even these will eventually fall out of favor (can't imagine the leases are cheap at all either)

Hotel Bars are highly successful in WHD/CBD/Southmarket. Restaurants Just don't stick around there, Willa Jean is literally the only one. Lit gone, company burger gone, maypop gone, mopho gone, starbucks gone, cellar door gone, cloud 9 gone, Restaurant 34 gone
