My canned sardines expired last July. Would you still eat them?

Just noticed that the date on the can of sardines that I brought for lunch has passed.
Are they still ok to eat?

No, I would not eat them, but it has nothing to do with the expiration date.

Is the date an actual expiration date or a best by date? Usually they are best by dates.

Certain things shouldn't be eaten after the expiration date.
Seafood is one of those things.

Then it is fine. USDA says canned fish is generally safe to consume up to 5 years past the best buy date. Best buy dates are for quality standards, not safety standards. This is assuming it has been stored properly and isn't damaged.
Not to say it won't taste off after the best buy date, but it is safe to consume.

If you need a good intestinal cleanout, go for it.

I'm on a remote jobsite and there is nothing close by.

If the can is not dented and still clearly sealed all around, you will be fine.

gotcha.
Well, as long as you have a roll of toilet paper in the truck, go for it.

as is usual in every “should I eat it?” thread, there is only one way to find out

Gonna give them the ole sniff check and if things aren't right then I hope dinner is plentiful later.

Just open the can and smell. Use common sense.
If it smells disgusting then they're probably fine.
