Truck Board: 2025 Tundra SR5

Morning fellas.
Looking at a low mileage 2025 Tundra SR5 4x4. I know Toyotas have the reputation of being reliable and long lasting vehicles with great resale value. Anyone here own or have knowledge of this model? I won’t be able to get to drive it until Friday, but wanted to know somethings to check for.

As far as I know the only issue was bad engines on the earlier releases of the current body style. Id dig into that for the one youre interested in. If its been replaced already or a non-issue for that year, I wouldnt be concerned.

New Toyota engines are not good. A lot of reports of failures across the board.
A shame they went away with the 5.7 v8

Nope. Toyotas HAD the reputation of being long lasting vehicles. It'll take awhile for the resale value to adjust to their new quality levels, though.
Having said that, there are zero trucks (and not many cars) in 2025 that don't have potential major issues and horror stories. The days of the Honda/Toyota that automatically goes 100,000 miles before its first "check engine" light are gone. I don't know that the Tundra isn't your best option in a full size, just that you shouldn't expect the reliability of a 2016 Tacoma.

You can hit Reddit r/ToyotaTundra and see the engine issues in post after post. I'm not sure Toyota has in squared away yet. As a Toyota fan, I would avoid.

We are seeing the results of the demand by Dems for better gas mileage.

Got a buddy who just rolled 22K miles and motor locked up. He's having a terrible time dealing with Toyota.

your buddy isn't dealing with Toyota, he's dealing with the dealer which apparently sucks.
Mine was under the recall. The dealer called me set a date to bring it in and had mine replaced over a weekend. I never had any issues with the recalled motor and new one (9k miles on it) has been fine.
I've enjoyed my truck. It's been solid, but I absolutely would rather have the 5.7 in it versus the new v6 3L TT.
ETA, mine is a '22

Do not do it. The sooner we stop buying these small displacement, over stressed turbo charged gassers, the sooner they may revert to building real engines again.

i gave my son my 2021 tacoma and i seriously considered a tundra. They drive great and have good power. When compared to other manufacturers, they are still thirsty. They still have a bad wrap from the issues they were having with some of the first 3.5 turbo engines they released in 2022. Heck, i see some people with 24's having issues. It has really hit their legendary resale values. I ended up getting a 24 f 150 lariat with the 3.5 ecoboost. believe it or not i can get almost 22 mpg with a crew cab 4x4. It pulls really good but thirsty when hauling anything.

Thanks for the responses. I’m currently in a ‘21 f150 with the powerboost hybrid engine. Fuel mileage in town is 23-34, but interstate travel is around 19-20. Getting close to 100k on the odometer, so thinking of changing it up.
I spoke to the dealer and he said all recalls are up to date. Clean Carfax and less than 15k miles. Non smoker 1 owner. Planning on seeing it Friday.
Thanks guys!

That's a lot of it, but it's also added complexity from customer demands. Nobody wants a fleet trim anything, they want all the bells & whistles. The mileage standards are responsible for stupid crap like ultra-thin oil, over stressed smaller engines and cylinder deactivation. Customers are responsible for wanting 20 cameras and air conditioned seats.
I'm looking at new trucks right now and I honestly can't see owning one past the warranty, but buying/selling every 3 years isn't very appealing either. I've driven my previous trucks 10 about years before buying a new one.

I've had 4 Tundras, all great, all 5.7's. I usually swap them every few years around 80-100k. When they went turbos I tried to find one the last year of the v8. Did not find one and kept the 2018 til it hit 200k. Never did any repairs on it except brake pads and fluids and tires.

You saying that Toyota replaced the entire engine in your truck?

Yep. Engine and turbos.
ETA: never had the 1st issue with the original engine. 55k miles on it.
Have just shy of 10k on the new one.

Man, that is pretty stellar service!

I doubt they had much choice. The second the NHTSA says that something is a safety issue you're issuing a recall, whether that's a blinker or an engine.

You'd think that, but Chevy has / had a stop sell on all their 6.2L engines.
If it blew up they'd replace it. If it didn't, they change the oil and tell you good luck....

The stop/sell deal is why we are seeing the Tundra recall adding model years as we go along. If they recalled all the engines they know could cause issues they would not be able to sell the current year at the time without changing out the engines before selling them. Hopefully its sorted out in '25 models but I don't see it being completely fixed til they re-design the current engine or go with a different engine design. The year by year recall is why I'm not in my 5th Tundra,,I don't trust they are fixed, maybe better but who wants a 75k truck that was tweaked to be reliable. Just put in a reliable engine. They should have stop sell when the issue was discovered, not sell what they apparently knew was a bad engine with debris in it(BS) or design flaws for years to loyal customers.
