As portal season ends, what role does LA HS football play in future rosters?

Coach Saban rightfully featured the richness of Louisiana HS talent as basis for Coach Kiffin to take decision to move to LSU.

In this new world of college football, how will Coach Kiffin / LSU balance the roster pipeline build of the future between portal and HS / tap into Louisiana’s fertile football talent and local LSU brand?

Cuts both ways more than ever:
Portal flows to money. HS recruits will eventually flow to portal to flow to money. Unless money keeps them home, was Coach Saban right?

Does LA talent matter to LSU, like it did to Saban, anymore?

Although the landscape as we know it has changed, I’ll just use LSU in the 90’s… As a kid I hated seeing the Warrick Dunn’s, Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne’s of Louisiana suit up for other teams. I still rooted for them but it’s not the same… Chase almost went to Florida so ask yourself, how would you have felt with him paired with Trask and Pitts? Imo Louisiana is important but missing out on one prospect isn’t the end of the world…

As much as we want to be stock filled with Louisiana guys it’s just not possible. You can certainly try, but more than ever you will see the big players getting offers they can’t refuse.

I expect it will be much like what Coach Jay does in baseball. He takes the kids ready to play and passes on those that need development.

We saw all of our “development” kids hit the portal this year. Maybe they were told to leave, maybe they thought the had better opportunities elsewhere.

Get the ready to start ones, let the others go to other schools and prove themselves then portal in the ones who’re successful and fit our needs.

One of the top qb, wr, te, g, de , s, are all in state next year class. So yes it matters. Its how you build the team. And then portal adds become just big adds, or depth.

Qb- we lose Leavitt if he has a good year. Houston fills
Wr- lot of 1 yr left kids added so royal can come spalsh as a fr day 1
Te- green goes to nfl if he has a 10 td season. Nfl scouts would salivate over him. Hudson is his clone, even bigger frame.
G- bah is gone next yr, and lake Charles kid is immediately is competing in our 2 deep.
De- forstall is needed. We lose ross, prince if he comes.
S- Eugene and anding help fill depth when we lose cooley and boise kid.

Lane came here because of LA talent pool. It'll be huge framework to building his program long term

It will start to matter again when lane starts to win. They will come and want to stay. Ideally you need them for 2 seasons to evaluate, and historically state kids have been prone to stick around longer when not seeing playing time.

If there's a HS Senior who's good enough to start and make a difference immediately, he's absolutely worth pursuing. With the portal these days, I think we'll start seeing bigger schools like LSU focus even more heavily on transfers while letting the lesser young talent get their first couple years of development in elsewhere. Why have a freshman take up a roster spot and not play when he can go to some other smaller school, get some reps in and grow a little, then come into LSU ready to take on the SEC with some actual game experience beyond just getting put in for garbage time.
Of course there's downsides to that but I really think it'll become more clear and defined that the P4 will start treating the G6 and even the lower ranked schools in their own conferences more like actual farm teams than they already do.

Members of the coaching staff have been tweeting photos from their visits to LA high schools this week. They’re smart enough to know in-state recruiting is important.

The elite will always be wanted

Tougher for the next level to get top D1 interest out of high school right now

Like Jay Johnson is doing.

Until they find a way to make legit 4 year contracts or something

Agree with this.

Yes it matters. No it’s not the same as before.

I see Lane building a base of HS kids from Louisiana & using the portal to fill gaps, add difference makers at specific needed spots.
