Any Ranchers out there ? Tell me about it...

I don't want to buy a ranch, so this thread should not be on the money board.
What's it like to own a ranch? Do y'all still use cowboys to round up the cattle? Or maybe cowgirls in this day and age
?
Is it profitable? Do you keep exotics around to make more money or for hunting leases? Did you inherit it or did you buy it as an investment? Do y'all sell 1/2 a cow or a 1/4 cow or "humanely slaughtered" beef to the hipsters to up your margins? Do you love it?
SIAP
Respectfully,

Sir this is Louisiana. We have camps. Texans have ranches.

Getting a million phone calls from landmen.

Ours usually follow the feed trailer pretty easily. The couple stragglers well herd with a dog or truck.

Ranch ops, no. With everything else, yes.

No just local deer. We’re not high fenced. And all the pigs you can shoot.

No but we do have some rules like we don’t sell to feed lots.

No. It’s really a part time gig for us. I married into it, my wife’s the 5th generation rancher. And we don’t live there full time.

My ranch is in a hidden valley. No cattle but the salads are awesome.

Sweet.

It's one day after another of fighting to maintain your dynasty and way of life in the face of relentless opposition from all sides, often resorting to morally ambiguous and violent means.

You operate around feeding schedules of your animals.
Only the largest ranches have on site cowboys, and they are all cattle related .
You can have incredibly great years financially and then be ruined nearly overnight. My family ranch almost went under during COVID after a buyer went out of business. It is better now, bordering on good because there is a stable buyer.
Ranches and producers are not responsible for the high prices. That's entirely a different story
Some will sell you a beef, at different levels. They usually advertise locally. Or go ask.
A lot of people that grow up with a ranch background are not returning to it for a ton of different reasons. It's a very unique way of life that TV might romantizise, but it's a lot more than 40 a week and you are on call at all times.

Ive gotten to know a few, a working rancher is hard dawn to dusk, then more work
its a hard life for hard men you have to be raised in it to do it
Or hire the foreman to run the ranch become a CEO but a CEO of unpredictable business
a weekend poser rancher,, that life seemed easy

Not much interest from oil. Mostly wind, solar, substations, power lines, cell towers, pipelines, data centers and bitcoin mining.

I think you mean Yellowstone. Landman is the O&G one , which as someone in that industry I find a bit ridiculous but highly entertaining plus it has Ali Larter

real ranches have FAR more infrastructure than that Hollywood version
They are mini-cities
I knew kids who got degrees in meteorology and got jobs at ranches not TV weather bunnies

Boom and bust, just like the oil business. Do y'all try to have side businesses to even out the highs and lows?
I think most reasonable people know that the big profit in this business is going to the meat-packers and not the ranchers.
Glad your ranch survived bud, here's hoping y'all make a killing this year
