Can one of you social media folk give me a quick explanation what this is and why I need it.
For reference, I am working with a possible distributor for my products in Costa Rica. He is asking me do I have it? Why do I need it? I try not to have many apps or use many. Yes Im old and like to keep things simple
Is he trying to send me dick pics?

It’s just a third party texting app.

It's a way to text and call and work around regional systems.
Dad used it when he was working overseas. It's fine never had an issue with it

WhatsApp is a free, popular messaging app owned by Meta that uses your phone's internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to send texts, voice/video calls, photos, and documents, replacing traditional SMS and call charges. It's known for its global reach, ease of use, and strong security features like end-to-end encryption, ensuring only you and the recipient can read messages. You sign up with your phone number and can message individuals or groups, share media, and even make voice/video calls worldwide.
Since apparently you're "old" and can't use google, but can post a topic on tiger droppings

Works very well. I use it for business and all of my family. Helps a lot if you have people using it via iPhones and androids, and internationally.

Get the app. It is great to use to communicate internationally. I worked with people in Mexico and it was the communication tool of choice. No fees to text or call.

It’s a chat program that when you are born in Latin America , step one get a name, step two begin using WhatsApp .
They all have it down there. It’s not too bad of an app. Supposed to be fully encrypted.

Use to be a great app, use to talk to a friend in Australia on it all the time. Now you have to have a facebook account to use it, so I deleted it.

More than just text messages as one normally thinks of it.
Good way for group messaging platform and communicating where regular social media isn't applicable. Can share videos/polls/services. You can find social media type setup for groups you may be interested in.
For instance if there was another hurricane Katrina type situation you could have hyperfocused groups for neighborhoods or even streets. People can join the chat and leave at will. The advantage is it takes a lot less data and limiting people is possible.
If you use signal or groupme they are very similar.
Israeli created, big in other parts of the world.
