Dog food help

I have a 1 yr old black lab, just turned 1 last month actually. He’s been eating purina puppy chow so far all his life and he eats it up everytime and licks the bowl like he’s obsessed. Well I knew I had to switch him to adult dog food now and his vet sells Science Diet. I went with the sensitive skin and stomach and he won’t touch it. He walks up to it several times to smell it and walks away. I’ve never EVER had a lab be a picky eater. Am I going to have to throw away an $89 bag of dog food or should I try another brand and hopefully find one he’ll eat? Any suggestions? Friend of mine says order some Canadian brand of chewy.

What about the adult Purina?

We just switched ours to Purina Pro sensitive. It’s supposed to be tasty to picky eaters.

Take the used bag to an animal shelter, you animal.

You can always mix it with the SD if he likes it.

Will they accept an open bag?

Always buy the smallest bag when you're switching. I learned this the hard way too.

They sell bone broth for dogs. Get some of that and pour a little on top his kibble.

Do you have any of the puppy food left? You probably need to slowly mix the new food in and the puppy food out.
Other than that, it’s a lab. He’ll start eating it before he starves or goes hungry for too long. You may just need to out stubborn him.

Why did you start with the sensitive skin variety?

My husky ate purina pro plan for 13 years and my German shepherds are on it now. They all love it

Vet industry here. You may be able to get a refund or swap. I won’t feed or recommend SD. Read ‘The Forever Dog’ and you’ll know more about canine nutrition than most. It’s clear you care and it’s an easy read. You can feed a great diet easily that will help your dog feel better and a lot less likely to age fast, get fat and disease issues. Woof

It was the only kind he had that was for full size adults.

Mix with the puppy chow and get him off it like that

Diamond naturals skin and coat.

I buy powdered goat milk as a topper for Purina one.

I was mixing the two so it wouldn’t be a total shock to switching him but he eats around the SD and picked out the purina but I’m out now and he won’t touch the SD.

Where can you get that from? Tractor supply?

I was spending $170. a month on food and treats for my 4 dogs. It was doable but why?
I just recently started boiling up some chicken parts or ground turkey with rice and vegetables and giving a serving spoon of that along with a dog food topping.
I think this is going to be a winner. Not that hard to do and it is not too labor intensive except removing the bones from the chicken parts.
