New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, after nixing a pair of executive orders that dealt with antisemitism and boycotting Israel, defended his actions amid fallout that has included sharp criticism from the Israeli government and concerns from local Jewish groups.

As one of his first acts as mayor, Mamdani declined to renew two executive orders signed by former Mayor Eric Adams: One that adopted a broad definition of antisemitism and another that prohibited city employees from engaging in the boycott, divest and sanctions movement against Israel.

The defunct orders were part of a suite of mayoral decrees signed by Adams that Mamdani revoked. During an unrelated press briefing Friday, Mamdani pledged to protect Jewish New Yorkers, but did not go into much detail about why he tossed the orders.

“My administration will also be marked by a city government that will be relentless in its efforts to combat hate and division, and we will showcase that by fighting hate across the city,” he said. “That includes fighting the scourge of antisemitism by actually funding hate crime prevention, by celebrating our neighbors and by practicing a politics of universality.”

So free speech is back?

The undoing of those executive orders appears to lessen government control

I agree with him not renewing that retarded antisemitism EO- letting an outside organization set moving target definitions of prohibited expression is, well, retarded.

I’m not versed on the anti-BDS rule… when it says it prevents gov employees from participating in BDS, is that while acting in official capacity or in one’s personal life?

I am for any measures that uphold the first amendment, no matter how much I disagree with the speech.

Maybe the Israeli commandos will swoop in at night and snatch Mamdani out of Gracie Mansion and the next day they’re walking him in chains in Tel Aviv.

I agree with all of this. Free speech/protests that do not incite or include violence and private freedom of association are kind of like rights that should be in a bill. While the prohibition of these things seemed to favor one group of people, his reasons for elimination of these have to do with his feelings (hatred of) about these people and not because he cherishes those rights.

To despise a corrupt government is not the same as hating a people because of their bloodline.

Just remember it’s going to be his definition of what constitutes “hate”.

This is one of the few things I’ll agree with this frick on.

Nobody is special.
That EO appeared to make a group special.

Probably, but let’s take them one at a time. I approve of this one (and I’m pro-Israel).
