The vehicles actual owner left their keys in it and the woman in the video thought the battery in her key fob was dead so had replaced the battery more than once.
quote:

- The post features bodycam footage from Lakewood Police showing an elderly woman who accidentally drove off in a stranger's keyless-entry SUV for three days, mistaking it for her daughter's after shopping at Fred Meyer, only realizing the error when it wouldn't lock properly.
- Captured on December 31, 2025, the video amassed 3,350 likes and 124,000 views in under a day, with replies blending laughter at her confusion—such as buying fob batteries—and empathy for the officer's patient explanation amid her flustered denials.
- This viral clip underscores keyless ignition vulnerabilities, as the car's interior-held keys allowed push-start access; FBI data indicates over 1 million U.S. vehicle thefts annually, with relay exploits on such systems rising 20% yearly per HLDI reports, though here it resolved harmlessly without charges.

Crazy that the Owner did not know keys were left. My truck and my wife's (no pics) car honk the horn if you close the door with the key's still in. She seemed innocent enough, I guess. Did the Owner not know what the honk was when closing the door?

Ha, one time I got into my car thinking someone had messed with my seat as a prank until I saw a book on new aged sex and I quickly realized it wasn’t my car. Shortly after a portly black lady came out of the store and got in right after I walked away

I travel a fair amount and rent a lot of vehicles and have gotten in the wrong one on more than one occasion thankfully I’ve realized it when I sat down, not after several days.

My dad came out of the John Deere dealer and got into another man’s truck and drove it to our farm. The guy whose truck it was saw my dad drive off. He was actually good friends of ours so he got in my dad’s truck and drove it to our farm and laughed about it. The trucks were both the same color and model. My dad was in his late 60’s when that happened and his mind was fine.

The other day I sat in someone else's vehicle that was parked next to mine. Same color, make, model - just one parking spot over. I guess they didn't lock their vehicle. I realized it before attempting to start the vehicle after noticing some personal things (papers, cords, etc) weren't in the center console area. I jumped out quick, hoping someone didn't see and assume I was trying to steal it. Ha.

Sadly, I keep too much shite in my truck to do this. I always have keys to something else on my dash board and something in a cup holder. But I have absolutely walked up to the wrong vehicle multiple times

A few years ago I was in a clients parking lot and I clicked the key fob and got to into a ford escape (company car) and the seat adjustment was way off and there was a big arse thermos bottle in the center console.
Oh shite this ain’t my car
I felt like a dumb arse. My car was same year and color, was parked in the next spot.
I guess their car was left open, hence that’s why I thought I unlocked the vehicle.
I felt pretty dumb

Long ago in had a black Saturn Vue. We had a spare key made but they didn't cut it right and it wouldn't unlock the door but would start the car. So it just hung on the key rack never used. One day I needed to go to the store and couldn't find my keys and the wife had the good spare in her purse. So I grabbed the bad spare and went to kroger. Came back out to my car and the door was locked. Tried the key in both sides hoping a miracle would happen and it would unlock but I knew it wouldn't. Go back to the driver side again tried it one last time while letting off a string of some choice curse worse. Little petite young woman walks up to me and asks if she could help me. I explained the whole spare key thing and that somehow the door was locked and now I'm locked out. She proceeds to tell me this is her car. Mine was parked parked two spaces over. Same make model color and interior color. Whoops.

I did a similar thing in a rental car. An identical vehicle parked right beside me and didn't lock their doors. I got in the car and a lady came running out of the convivence store yelling at me.

I pulled up at Home Depot the other day and within seconds a guy opened the passenger side back door. Scared the hell out of me, I was getting my stuff together to get out, the guy was really embarrassed and apologized. His truck, same model and color was the next row over.
