Woman took a vehicle thinking it’s hers, cops stop her days later, tell her it’s not hers

If tweet fails to load, click here. The vehicles actual owner left their keys in it and the woman in the video thought the battery in her key fob was dead so had replaced the battery more than once.
quote:
- The post features bodycam footage from Lakewood Police showing an elderly woman who accidentally drove off in a stranger's keyless-entry SUV for three days, mistaking it for her daughter's after shopping at Fred Meyer, only realizing the error when it wouldn't lock properly.
- Captured on December 31, 2025, the video amassed 3,350 likes and 124,000 views in under a day, with replies blending laughter at her confusion—such as buying fob batteries—and empathy for the officer's patient explanation amid her flustered denials.
- This viral clip underscores keyless ignition vulnerabilities, as the car's interior-held keys allowed push-start access; FBI data indicates over 1 million U.S. vehicle thefts annually, with relay exploits on such systems rising 20% yearly per HLDI reports, though here it resolved harmlessly without charges.

Crazy that the Owner did not know keys were left. My truck and my wife's (no pics) car honk the horn if you close the door with the key's still in. She seemed innocent enough, I guess. Did the Owner not know what the honk was when closing the door?

Ha, one time I got into my car thinking someone had messed with my seat as a prank until I saw a book on new aged sex and I quickly realized it wasn’t my car. Shortly after a portly black lady came out of the store and got in right after I walked away

I travel a fair amount and rent a lot of vehicles and have gotten in the wrong one on more than one occasion thankfully I’ve realized it when I sat down, not after several days.

My dad came out of the John Deere dealer and got into another man’s truck and drove it to our farm. The guy whose truck it was saw my dad drive off. He was actually good friends of ours so he got in my dad’s truck and drove it to our farm and laughed about it. The trucks were both the same color and model. My dad was in his late 60’s when that happened and his mind was fine.

The other day I sat in someone else's vehicle that was parked next to mine. Same color, make, model - just one parking spot over. I guess they didn't lock their vehicle. I realized it before attempting to start the vehicle after noticing some personal things (papers, cords, etc) weren't in the center console area. I jumped out quick, hoping someone didn't see and assume I was trying to steal it. Ha.
