During my childhood and formative years you were my North Star. During my adulthood you turned into absolute garbage.

Perhaps just officially. MTV as we once knew it has been dead for a very long time.

This move affects MTV’s dedicated music-only channels, not the main MTV network, which will continue airing reality shows and pop culture programming.
Two videos are needed here..
"I want my MTV" sung to the notes of "Don't stand so close to me..."

Video killed the video star.

MTV was very much a part of my formative years, and I couldn't care less about this. No feelings at all and that is a statement on what they have become. Funny to watch the U.S. entertainment industry fail so spectacularly.

MTV was on 24 hours a day in my bedroom during my teenage years.
Its a shame that it became the all day Ridiculousness channel.

If they had kept playing music videos with occasional side forays they would have continued to thrive.
My two favorite MTV shows were their games shows "Remote Control" and "Inquisition".

I watched that episode of Remote Control when the host went off on one of the contestants. I think that got him fired.
Also, The State, Viva Variety, Aeon Flux, Beavis and Butthead etc

MTV died around 1995. Or whenever Yo MTV Raps and reality shows began.

It was The Real World. The beginning of the end of MTV and cable programming as we knew it.

I did enjoy that first season or the Real World, but you're right, it was like drinking poison.

This can't be overstated.
The Real World was also my first recollection of mindless, ginned up conflict TV that's become a scourge.

YouTube killed MTV. There was a time when they would have a "world premiere" for videos from big name acts. Quite a few successful directors got their starts with music videos.
My parents made me go to bed at 10:00 on Saturdays because I had to get up early for church. After church and Sunday dinner with the grandparents, I would watch my weekly recording of Head Bangers' Ball.

IMO, MTV (as we knew it growing up in the 80's- 90's) killed itself by changing the broadcast programming. Reality television shows created by MTV in the 2000's generated so much $$$ from advertising and fans watching these stupid shows. There was no money being made from 3-minute music videos. MTV shifted their focus to the following: Real World, The Hills, Jersey Shore, Catfish, Teen Mom, Rupaul, etc ....
120 minutes, Heavy Metal Mania, Friday Night Video Fights, top 20 Countdown, Headbangers Ball, were all eventually cancelled and phased out for trash tv.

Truth. The "Real world" (where they put young adults with no jobs up in multi-million dollar homes), was TV's first reality show. TV in general has been down hill from there.

Kind of sad to watch it's slow death but honestly surprised it stayed around as long as it did. Obviously I'm a good bit younger than most here so my memory of MTV is different, I remember watching this at the VMAs and seeing them perform live on top of some random arse skyscraper was wild
