It seems extremely foolish, but I am strongly considering not filing this year. How much of this fraud, waste and abuse are we supposed to take?

At the end of the day, I will be a giant pu$$Y and file but man is it tempting.

I have a guy that works for me that says he hasn’t done it in 9yrs. I don’t really believe him though he's kind of full of shite.

Your taxes are already being withheld. Not filing isn't going to do you any favors.

No because the risk isn’t worth avoiding it. I’m for no taxes but don’t mess around with the government man.

It will eventually get the IRS on your arse and will be bad if your withholding doesn't cover your tax liability.

With experience in IRS tax resolution as part of my accountancy work.. it's easier to catch people that file every year and then just stop.

It's not a person that is looking at massive stacks of spreadsheets or something... their computers find low hanging fruit like no filed return, but there is income documents very easily.

If your "friend" has gotten away with not filing taxes for nearly a decade, there is three scenarios. 1) a quick math check of his W2 shows he would be owed a refund even as a single filer and they haven't bothered. 2) He makes next to nothing and would not have to file due to the standard deduction, or 3) He works as a contractor and the person he does the work for is stupid enough to not file a 1099.

If it's none of those three, he is as lucky as a lottery winner to not get a single letter in nearly 10 years.

That is assuming he is not retired and just getting straight social security.

My dad didn’t file for about the last 15 years of his life. You can’t do it if you’re a W2; they’ll catch up to you in about six years and put you in jail. But he was all black market except for his social security checks, and they never even seized those.

They audited him once - this was right before he stopped filing - and he had been hiding his cash income. The auditor said, “We don’t need to prove the fraud. We can just show you can’t afford this lifestyle. So how are you affording this?”
He said, “With my savings.”
She said, “We see your bank accounts. There are no savings.”
“I keep it buried”
“Where?”
“I’m not telling you!”

That last line became legend in our family. Eventually dad had to move to Mexico, not to avoid the IRS, but to be able to afford a lifestyle. He didn’t speak a lick of Spanish either. On $650 per month social security he house-sat a mountain chalet, and had a maid/cook and a hooker. Oh and he smuggled a little silver every time he came home.

if you're getting money back the IRS really doesn't care if you file or not you have three years to file that return and claim a refund. if you owe money it will take them 2 years to catch up with you and interest and penalties will double what you owe them, good luck and god bless!

You don't have to.

2 things you absolutely have to do is be born and die.

Everything else is a choice.

Sure

But I don't know his specific tax situation since he didn't mention it

If he owes money that's his problem

whether there is an actual Constitutional law requiring payment of income tax has long been in question.
