Multiple Suppressor Questions
Posted on 12/28/25 at 5:49 pm

1. Can you explain the “trust” for the suppressor? I heard someone reference a “big trust”. Is there a cost associated with the “trust”?
2. This is more of an ammo with suppressor question. If you use sub sonic ammo with a .308 with a suppressor will it put a good hole in the deer and leave a good blood trail?

1. There is a trust that you can put all SBR and Cans under or you can do a single shot trust for each individual item.
2. You can kill deer with subs out of a .308 but I wouldn’t do it. Need to make sure you get the right bullet so it expands at slower speeds but again it’s not ideal.

Dumb follow up question to #2 - if I'm not going for super quiet, just not loud at all (scientific description right there), what can I expect from just using normal ammo out of a 6.5cm or .270? Just lots more tolerable or actually not loud at all?
Also, I assume it could affect zero and I would have to sight things in again if I did it previously - any other effects when it comes to using normal ammo?

Still have a crack of the bullet which is loud but no boom.
Most silencers made today don’t cause a shift in zero but you need to shoot to verify.

when shooting supersonic ammo the crack you hear when the sound barrier is broken will happen with or without the suppressor. The suppressor quiets the report at the firearm barrel only
So, quieter but not quiet. Also your point of impact may change with the suppressor vs without

Not Hollywood quiet but the good ones are pretty damn not loud.

If you get the right can it will be hearing safe. Nothing supersonic high powered rifles shoot will be that quiet. I use them so I can hunt and not have to wear hearing protection. Some cans won’t change point of impact and some will so you should always sight in the rifle after putting a can on it or switching to a different can.
I just got another can that’s better suited for my .308 so I shot it and it was off from the last can I had on it. I have 4 main hunting rifles and split two cans between the 4 riles.

Not sure I agree with that. I can tell a difference when someone is shooting with a can and without. I didn’t even hear my brother shoot this am with a .300 win mag with a can on it. That has a lot to do with the wind but if he didn’t have a can on it I would have heard it for sure.
It for sure lowers the noise that the neighbors hear and is not as loud.

I was about 500 yards from another stander shooting supressed 28 Nosler. It sounded like a .22.

Nice, this is on par with how scientifically I worded the question.
I plan to get one for the AR first, because fun, and it's a 5.56. If I have to get a different one for hunting, that's fine.

Its because the supersonic crack is not very loud. Its dependent on the size of the object, doppler effect, etc. Bare muzzle, the muzzle blast is so deafening that everything sounds way different.
I know an AR15 with an OCM5 is maybe quieter than a supersonic .22 lr rifle. Definitely quieter than a 17hmr rifle. Easily hearing safe for occasional shots.
If you screw a supressor on a supersonic centerfire rifle expecting Hollywood pew sounds, youre going to be disappointed. If you do it expecting to be able to shoot at a deer without getting your ears split open and your brains rattled out, you'll be very happy.

My bolt 308 with supers sounds about like a 22 to me as a shooter. I feel it is hearing safe. I make my kids wear muffs when we shoot it. My 300aac with subs sounds like a whatever it hits. They shoot it without muffs. 22 with standard velocity also sounds like whatever it bangs into. Suppressors are awesome and make whatever you shoot more fun. I will have more when this craziness dies down.
Probably been said but bolts or single shots are as quiet as you can get.

If you do not mind me asking, what did you get? I’ll be looking to get one for a .308.

That's just factually wrong.

Ear pro is dependent on a variety of factors. Barrel length, can length, can design, can+brake vs no brake, powder charge. Lots of things go into it, but there are a multitude of cans out there that are comfortable with no ear pro, especially in shooting scenarios.
Personally, even with my quietest cans, I still wear ear pro. It makes me more comfortable at the shot.

Excellent idea. Just do a lot of research on what the options are vs what you want to accomplish.

I won’t wear them when hunting or taking a shot or two.
If I’m doing extended shooting time I will.

Simple foam plugs with any suppressor make it very quiet.
