Watching Pain Killer on Netflix about OxyContin. I guess I was never into drugs and thankfully never had a major injuries where doctors got me addicted to this back in its hey day.

I remember working with an older guy who had a back injury then went completely off the rails eventually getting fired. I’m assuming this had something to do with it thinking back.

Anyone got any stories from the wrong end of this? Anyone work for Purdue pharma back in the day as a sales rep or shoveling the goods?

Wonder why people no longer trust drug companies?

I've been eating them daily for 20 years. I wouldn't exactly call it a pandemic. It helps tremendously with my pain from degenerative disk disease.

The major problem was the brand oxycontin. They made them in time release and available in ridiculous strengths. Crushing them released the full dose all at once.

Had a friend in the late 90’s that had a six figure job right out of college (that was really serious money back then) and doing really well, and got caught up. It was a struggle for him for 10-15 years he’s good now, but it definitely but a dent in his career. I’ve known of a few others that either ended up dead or still struggling.
It’s a sad situation.

My step dad OD'd on either oxycontin or MScontin back in 1998.

He had legit injuries and surgeries dating from the mid to late 80s up through the 90s... was in need of pain relief but definitely misused his meds.

My mother never was part of a settlement from that- but did win one from where they put the wrong sized hip in him.

The fact that they got away with prescribing a 160mg oxy for a brief period is still mind blowing to me

Watched that with mom when she was in the hospital with cancer. Made her afraid to take the drugs so that was a bad choice.

The oxy epidemic was enough for me to stop trusting doctors and think for myself. Many many people weren’t so lucky.

I worked in the pain management industry for several years. Had a doc tell me if you take opioids for any length of time you will get addicted. It’s not a character thing it’s just physiology.

Not sure how anyone takes Opioids, locks me up like a Mofo.
Maybe users take laxatives too?

I guess it can be part of any addiction, but it’s usually not the main part.

My sister OD'd on it back in 2020. She was found dead in a hotel room.

I'm not a doc but I disagree with that, there are addictive personality types that can become addicted to anything, and it doesn't have to be chemically related, I just had surgery a couple of days ago and was prescribed hydrocodone, I took it initially as needed, and the wife got one out this morning and told her I didn't think I need it today, pain is subsiding nicely

same
if I only take one I can’t shite for days.

thankfully that has prevented me from even thinking about taking an opiate for fun. The few times I’ve been prescribed them I either don’t go get them or I flush them

Not me personally, but a friend from high school OD’d about 10 years ago.

The opioid epidemic tore through our area. Many families torn apart by them. Made me never trust the pharmaceutical industry.

Terrible. We need stricter penalties for the pushers.

why is that? there is a legitimate need for pain management, not the pharmaceutical industry's fault that individuals abuse them

Not sure if Vicatin is an opioid (I’m an idiot when it comes to drugs) but got prescribed two weeks worth years ago after getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Never took one.

The sad thing is there are people that would take the entire two weeks worth not because they need it, but because that’s what the doctor prescribed so they feel it’s the right thing to do. It’s amazing how many people are incapable of thinking for themselves.
