Yikes.

Sooner than I thought.

I swear this is my last "scary AI" thread today

LINK

quote:

In the world of artificial intelligence, the idea of “singularity” looms large. This slippery concept describes the moment AI exceeds beyond human control and rapidly transforms society. The tricky thing about AI singularity (and why it borrows terminology from black hole physics) is that it’s enormously difficult to predict where it begins and nearly impossible to know what’s beyond this technological “event horizon.”

quote:

However, some AI researchers are on the hunt for signs of reaching singularity measured by AI progress approaching the skills and ability comparable to a human.

One such metric, defined by Translated, a Rome-based translation company, is an AI’s ability to translate speech at the accuracy of a human. Language is one of the most difficult AI challenges, but a computer that could close that gap could theoretically show signs of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Saw that there is a group using AI to determine what dolphins and whales are saying to each other. They expect that within 5-7 years we will understand their language.

I hope they aren't talking shite about us.

I’ve read some compelling arguments that AGI is not even possible.

I particularly like the idea that consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe instead of just a byproduct of matter.

I'd like to know the process for that. Seem like there would need to be a lot of observable behavior to go along with the sounds.

At the rate things are going, it will probably be faster than 4 years.

You must be easily mesmerized. Pull back the curtains and it’s not as impressive as people think.

I'm not the brightest, but can't we just "unplug" the data center(s)?

You are thinking in a linear fashion, AI's growth in intelligence its exponential. Its like those Will Smith videos a year ago, everyone was laughing but today we have videos that are almost indistinguishable from reality unless you are really paying attention. In a few years, there will be no difference.
The only way it doesn't happen in 4 years or less is if we hit a major power crunch and there is no power for all the required compute. But even then NVIDIA or Google will make more power efficient chips to get around that road block.

I’d imagine dolphins would be talking about where to hunt, threats, and where the bitches are at.

Consciousness is something special. Where it comes from is beyond human comprehension, imo, and why we can't give it to something else.

Now, that doesn't mean AI can't frick some shite up. We can certainly bungle alignment and have it kill all of us.

Chips aren’t the roadblock the ability to actually learn and create something that it hasn’t been taught is the problem. Said differently it’s problem is it’s limited by human knowledge.

I just don’t understand why we keep attempting to advance it.

I have yet to find someone who thinks the endgame of AI is a good thing.

Massive amounts of jobless humans at best, war against machines and extermination of the human race at worst.
