Top White House economic adviser says $2k tariff checks for Americans depends on Congress

Washington — Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett said Sunday that President Trump's idea to give Americans $2,000 checks funded by tariff revenue will "depend on what happens with Congress."
"I would expect that in the new year, the president will bring forth a proposal to Congress to make that happen," Hassett said on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan."
Since July, Mr. Trump has floated a possible rebate for some Americans based on tariff revenue. And last month, the president posted on social media that a "dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News last month that the checks would likely go to households making less than $100,000. He said at the time it remained "in discussion."
Hassett noted that Congress would have to approve the funds, which would likely be issued through the tax code and require lawmakers to pass new legislation authorizing the Treasury Department to send checks. But Hassett touted "a lot of positive news about the economy" since July that he suggested makes the checks more possible.
quote:
Hassett said the funds could come from tariff revenue, while noting that "in the end, you know, we get taxes, we get tariffs, we get revenue from lots of places, and then Congress decides how to spend those money. That's an appropriation."
quote:
Hassett said most of the tariffs put in place this year "have proven their mettle," pointing to high growth, reduction in the trade deficit and lower imports from China.

I will never see a stimulus or any check from government. Despite paying more taxes than the freeloaders. They still get checks

I don’t want the checks. I want the income tax abolished. Stop sending endless handouts to people who contribute nothing to the system.
The income tax is literally just a middle class punishment. Wealthy people don’t pay income tax, because they write everything off and poor people don’t pay income tax.

F that shite... give the money to the people that pay into the system.
The only ones eligible should be the 50% of Americans who pay federal income taxes.

Of course tariff money gets means tested.

I’m sick of people that don’t pay into the system being rewarded with my money.
Use all of this money to resead social security or decrease the retirement/medicaid age so I can retire earlier.

Yay more inflation.
Look at you worrying about silly things like inflation when there’s votes to buy next year for midterms.

If we're going to make it political then it needs to go to districts where a MAGA seat is in jeopardy or where MAGA has a chance to take seat

And congress needs to allocate that money to the treasury and then cut the same amount from current spending.

Wasn’t the plan to use tariffs to reduce $2T deficit? Does tossing out printed money to buy bling and bass boat accessories and screaming “love me!!! I’m you benevolent benefactor!!!” Reduce the deficit?

My biggest concern here is all the illegals who have SSNs still here… they will get checks just like they get welfare and EBT.
If DJT gives money out unknowingly to people who shouldn’t be here it would be devastating to his movement.

Reducing the deficit has never been a priority.
Trump loves spending. We're going to get tighter borders, but the rest is garden variety DC political bullshite.

I think the 2k check is stupid but what does it have to do with populism? The premise is funds to distribute not to sway anyone to vote.

Re the “vote buying “, I’m wondering if the Board thinks it would be money well spent IF it increases Republican majorities in Congress? Minus codifying much of Trump’s EO-based policies it could go away at the whim of a future Dem POTUS. Open Border and another 25 million immigrants would seal the fate of this Nation.
Not to mention that a Dem Congress means no Filibuster and codification in the opposite direction. Supreme Court stacking, Senate seat expansion via Puerto Rico/DC, and Amnesty/Voter Roll overhaul, et al).
Will Illegals get a check as well?
