save Americans billions, maybe trillions of dollars. And could this happen under Trump?

It will collapse before any president committed that political suicide.

Retirement age must be raised and self directed investments need to be implemented and incorporated as an option

Like the OP doesn’t know the answer.
Will we save money if we take away earned income from tens of millions of Americans? F’ing duh.
Let’s continue to force people to pay into SS but not pay them when they retire.
While we are at it, let’s cut all federal grants to states for police and fire protection so their salary is cut to save even more money and let’s make every person who works at a federal prison a slave and force them to work for food only.
The short answer is there’s lots of ways to save a gabillion dollars.

This 60 year old disagrees. I’ve worked since it was 15 years old. I’ve more than earned what I will soon collect from SS. I put myself through college without student loans. I did it by working my arse off in some terrible jobs. I earned it.
A far better option to making the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) available to everybody. Most people, even low wage folks would retire millionaires.

Eliminating all fraud waste and abuse and shipping out 25 million illegals is the first steps.

But the retirement age MUST be raised
It will happen, question is when, and where do they draw the line to grandfather people in - the blowback will be enormous, so you can count on it not affecting you (or probably even me at my age) ; but people in their 30’s and 40’ will see the retirement date moved at some point

First clean the entire SS system up then re-evaluate

We take care of ourselves, improve medical science, and for what? So we can work even more? So we can pay more taxes? So we can keep funding welfare, foreign countries, and politicians' bank accounts at the expense of our golden years?
What's the point of increasing life expectancy if retirement age keeps getting pushed closer to death?
Instead of forcing innocent people to work more to "fix" a broken system, how about we stop stealing money from them so they don't have to work until they die? How about we stop intentionally devaluing our money so that money made 20 years ago isn't useless today?
By just going along with increasing the retirement age, you are causing American workers to suffer for the sins of congress. You are letting congress off the hook by accepting to give up more of your life to cover up their failure.
They intentionally screwed you, and anyone willing to just give up years of retirement so politicians can protect their interests and offer you a "solution" to the problem they created is a doormat. And they've actually convinced many that giving up years of their life is the right and conservative thing to do.

I’d take a tax free lump sum of 50% what I have paid into it to opt out of SS.
SS is a ponzi scheme that’s mandatory for everyone to pay into. Anyone born after 1973ish is going to see a significantly reduced amount if anything at all.

Do government retirees get a pension? Cut that
Posted on 12/22/25 at 5:25 am to drkirk90
It’s going to collapse anyways. Government entitlement programs are the main reason for our debt and ineptitude.
