America’s worst airline gets worse.

Members of American Airlines' loyalty program will no longer earn miles or other travel rewards when purchasing a basic economy ticket. People enrolled in the carrier's AAdvantage program previously earned two miles and loyalty points for each dollar they spent on a regular fare. Now they will only earn points if they buy a more expensive ticket. The new policy, which American Airlines announced on Thursday, is effective as of Dec. 17.

There’s a difference between economy and basic economy.

It is unpossible to defend AA in general but practically, basic economy fares are drastically lower than the next tier of fares. The consumer is getting their “win” at the time of purchase of those basic economy fares.

Basic economy is the cheapest seats they have. You have to pay for seats if you want to pick where you sit. The people that are buying basic economic aren’t really accumulating miles for travel. If you want miles, just buy a regular ticket.

People that fly basic economy arent worried about miles
Only business travelers fly enough for airline reward stuff to matter and they arent flying basic economy

Yeah but Delta is on time and doesn’t lose bags like American does

Flew AA through Dallas to Jacksonville in August. They screwed us going both ways. AND it was a trip using miles. I am so glad I used them all up and can now to never ever have to use that POS airline again.

Delta is so cheap they won’t even give you a Coke if your flight is less than 500 miles
Posted on 12/20/25 at 5:51 pm to CapnKangaroo
Delta already does this. It’s a cheap no frills ticket that gets no rewards. People are so ignorant.

United also does all of this already. Plus they beat the shite out of you and drag you off after.
